ZTE Axon 20 5G degradation shows how the world’s first selfie camera works under the screen

The quest to banish notches from modern smartphone designs has resulted in some pretty clever innovations, the latest of which happens to be the selfie camera under the screen of the ZTE Axon 20 5G.

The 32-megapixel camera hidden under the screen did not quite impress us in our review of the device earlier this month, but it is a worthy side step to the hole or pop-up selfie cam we have seen in previous devices. Now a new demolition video from YouTuber JerryRigEverything gives us a closer look at how the Axon 20’s under-display camera works.

Beyond just being a generally insightful overview of the various components of a modern smartphone, the Axon 20 Demolition shows how ZTE actually uses two monitors stacked on top of each other (a small, square and low resolution on top of the selfie camera and OLED top panel) for to let the camera under the screen look out at the user from the screen on the top layer.

It’s a first-generation device, but it’s undoubtedly a signal of where phone design will go in the future, as companies aim to preserve the edge-to-edge screen without compromising on notches and cuts for things like selfie cameras. and fingerprint scanners.
