YouTube can now stream 4K on any Android device

4K media is widely available today, and YouTube is full of it, thanks to 4K cameras on smartphones and mirrorless cameras as well. Now the platform allows more people to watch 4K content, with YouTube for Android now streaming 4K content, regardless of screen resolution.

Over the past day or so, YouTube for Android has expanded the ability to view content in up to 4K resolution if available, even if the screen does not offer that resolution.

For the most part, smartphone screens fall somewhere between 720p and 1440p, with YouTube previously limiting the streaming resolution of a video to the resolution of the screen itself. YouTube for Android now streams video up to 21

60p on all screens. Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 with 1080p screens, for example, now have the ability to stream 4K videos on my devices, and our tipster could see the same thing on Pixel 4. Two Reddit threads show that this feature rolls out quite widely.

Of course, this does not change the actual resolution of the screen itself. IF you have a 1080p screen, you will still watch content efficiently in 1080p. butIf you stream the content at a higher resolution, the content will look a little sharper on the screen, even though there is technically no resolution difference. The difference will be harder to see on a small phone screen than it is on a computer, but it’s nice that Google gives users the option.
