Xiaomi today unveiled a new concept smartphone that takes curved screens to the next level. The device is based on the expertise Xiaomi gained with the Mi Mix Alpha concept, and it has a square curved waterfall that folds seamlessly around all edges.
We first heard about the new concept unit in April last year, when Xiaomi filed a patent for a phone with a waterfall and a camera under the screen. Now the company has finally shown the device in a video posted on Weibo. As you can see in the attached video, the new concept has no framework at all. Instead, the screen of the device curves around all four edges, giving it a futuristic look.
Like the Mi Mix Alpha, the new Xiaomi Concept appears to run a modified version of the MIUI that lights up the left and right edges for incoming alerts. In addition, the device appears to have all the status bar icons on the right edge, giving it a cleaner look up front. Since the device does not appear to have any physical buttons on the sides, it probably uses the same touch-sensitive virtual side buttons as the Mi Mix Alpha. On the back, the concept unit has a rectangular camera module with a single camera and a flash.

I’ve seen and touched the real product, and I have to say … this form factor can really be the new trend. pic.twitter.com/BK6A8Zv0EE

Along with the video, Xiaomi has also shared a teaser image for the Waterfall Display concept that reveals some extra info. According to the picture, the device has a unibody design completely devoid of ports. The innovative screen curves 88 ° over the edges, and Xiaomi claims that it uses several groundbreaking advances in glass bending and lamination technology. Furthermore, the picture reveals that Xiaomi filed 46 innovative patents during development.
Although I’m a fan of the overall look, I’m concerned about the durability and ability to identify accidental touches accurately. The latter can make it an absolute nightmare to use. What do you bring with you Xiaomi’s new Waterfall Display phone? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
