  • Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun wants to know from fans if they want to buy a $ 1500 phone from the company.
  • Management will discuss the topic on February 7th.
  • He could suggest the company’s plans for the folding phone.

Xiaomi has been managing the budget smartphone segment for a while now. Even the flagship phones are usually cheaper than what the competitors have to offer. But last year, the Mi 10 hit the Ultra $ 1000 mark at the top end, and now it looks like the Chinese company wants to go beyond that premium price barrier.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has asked Weibo fans if they want to buy a 10,000 yuan ($ 1,548) phone from the company. He also asked them what a Xiaomi phone with this price tag should look like.

The question may be a hint about an upcoming expensive Xiaomi device, possibly the company’s first folding phone that has been in use for a while now. Then again, these would mean that you have to spend for these processes before it can move on to the ultra-premium smartphone segment.

This is not the first time Jun has hinted at Xiaomi’s desire to break away from its reputation as a budget maker for smartphones. The company even started selling its Mi 10 flagship in India last year, signaling that it was willing to try its luck in the premium area, in a country where it built its strong market share on the back of entry-level devices.

Still, we expect to hear more about Xiaomi’s plans for expensive phones on February 7, when Jun addresses Mi fans for the Chinese New Year. Until then, let us know what you think of his question.
