XCOM Legends is a new free to play strategy game that has quietly added another XCOM part to your Android library.
The game was discovered over the weekend thanks to game uploads uploaded by the YouTube channel Android IOS Cabogame (recorded via a VPN redirected to the Philippines), and without a look from IP holder 2K or the parent company Take-Two. Some XCOM fans seem to have taken the video as an official revelation, or at least stumbled upon it, judging by how many dislikes it has gathered.
XCOM Legends is currently unavailable in most regions, so 2K calls this a “soft launch”
Legends has a single player campaign and PvP where you form groups of five and Duke out in linear sequences of shootouts. Your teammates’ abilities, including the spectacular ability to move around the battlefield and away from the exposed places, the game automatically lets you in during stage transitions, everything is precipitation-based judging from the early footage.
The XCOM Legends store list invites potential bosses to “collect legendary heroes” from multiple races, and the video above confirms that to do so, you must try the game’s gacha system, known here as Archway. When the small detail clicked in my head, the other gacha functions here – base construction, equipment runes, etc. – began to make more sense.
XCOM Legends is apparently the first game from developer Iridium Starfish, which has no other games listed on the Google Play Store or website. According to Legends’ store listing, the studio is headquartered at Take-Two in the New York office, and the only reason I looked it up was to confirm that it was not all a hallucination on my part. This is not the first XCOM game on mobile platforms. You can also play XCOM: Enemy Within, XCOM 2 Collection and XCOM board games.
Mainline XCOM developer Firaxis has “several” new games to show this year.
