1. The Microsoft Edge browser provides privacy enhancements

Windows 10 version 20H2 is the first to come with the updated Microsoft Edge browser installed by default. The browser is now built on Chromium, Google’s open source foundation for the Chrome browser, making it compatible with more websites than the old version was.

There are other benefits as well. The new Edge browser includes a privacy feature that tries to block sites that track you online – similar to Mozilla’s Firefox browser. And a feature called Collections, allows you to more easily gather information from different websites while doing research.

To use the new Edge browser privacy settings: You use the new Edge browser in much the same way as with any other browser. Navigate to the logo on the taskbar or from the Start menu – it looks like a circular crashing wave that tones blue, green and aqua, similar to the old blue Internet Explorer “e” icon.

To configure the privacy features, go to Settings> Privacy and services. You’ll see three prevention tracking options: Basic (allows most trackers), Balanced (blocks trackers from sites you haven’t visited – Microsoft recommends this), and Strict (blocks a majority of trackers from all sites).

To check your privacy settings when using the browser, click on the lock icon to the left of the search field. A box will appear to tell you if your connection is secure, with options to check the site certificate, cookies in use and site permissions. You can also turn tracking prevention on or off and manage the setting for all websites you visit. If it is turned on, you will see the number of trackers that the browser has blocked.

To use the Edge browser collection feature: After navigating to a page you want to save, click on the icon that looks like a “+“in a box to the right of the search box. This will open the collection panel on the right of the screen. Click Start new collection, and rename it to whatever you want. You can click Add current page to save the web page you are on. You can also click and drag an image from the page to the collection, as well as select and drag text, and also add your own notes. To export your collection to Word or Excel, click on the three dots part and more the icon at the top of the collection.

2. Customize the new Start menu

The new Start menu will change the look of the tiles.

Microsoft

The classic Windows Start menu gets an update in the October 2020 update. The new version has a more streamlined design, and replaces the colored back plates behind the logos in your app list with a partially transparent background, so that the icons stand out more. The colors will also change depending on whether you are running light or dark mode.

To customize the new Start menu: To add an accent color so that your tiles match your desktop theme, go to Settings> Personalization> Color and activate the accent color on Start, Taskbar, and Action Center.

3. Open all your tabs at once

See all your tabs at once by pressing Alt + Tab.

Microsoft

With the update, you will be able to open all your tabs in Edge with a simple command, instead of just the active one in each browser window. This makes it easier to get a full overview of each window you have opened, instead of just one. You can also configure it to show only the last three or five tabs, or turn it off completely. However, it only works with the Edge browser, at least for now.

To customize the tabs: To open all the tabs in Edge at once, press Alt + Tab. Go to to configure the tab settings or turn off the feature Settings> System> Multitasking. You will see a drop-down menu with options for what Alt + Tab can do.
