Samsung Isocell Dual Pixel Pro

  • Samsung has announced 50MP Isocell GN2 camera sensor.

Samsung announced the 50MP Isocell GN1 last year, and provided departure from 108MP sensors. GN1’s lower resolution was shifted by the much larger pixels, which enabled significant improvements for capturing low light on paper.

Samsung has now announced a successor to the Isocell GN1, called the Isocell GN2. This is also a 50MP sensor, but it has a larger sensor size (1 / 1.12-inch) and larger pixels (1.4 microns) than its predecessor. The pixel size in particular is remarkable, as this is the same size as the IMX363 sensor used in most of Google’s Pixel phones.

A larger pixel size provides better image quality when the sun goes down, so we look forward to seeing standard images from the new sensor. In any case, the Isocell GN2 is also capable of using four-in-one pixel binding to deliver images roughly comparable to a 12.5 MP 2.8 micron pixel camera.

The improvements do not end here either, as Samsung says that the Isocell GN2 is the first sensor to offer Dual Pixel Pro technology. This is an upgraded version of autofocus phase detection, which sees two photodiodes in each pixel used for faster autofocus. But the upgraded technology also makes it possible to focus in all directions due to the fact that pixels can be divided both vertically or diagonally. Samsung claims that the diagonal approach allows “focusing agents” to better recognize the top and bottom of a frame.

Samsung’s latest 50MP camera sensor also provides offset HDR functionality, which was lacking from the Isocell GN1. This sounds like traditional HDR technology, as the sensor captures short, medium and long exposures. However, it is claimed that this approach provides 24% lower power consumption compared to HDR in real time seen on the previous sensor.

The previous sensor and the new sensor both have Smart ISO technology, which intelligently selects the best ISO for a scene. But Samsung Isocell GN2 also provides Smart ISO Pro functionality, so how does this differ?

Unlike Smart ISO, which uses readings from a single ISO per image, Smart ISO Pro, which uses an iDCG solution (intra scene dual conversion gain), takes readings from both high and low ISO to instantly create high-end images. dynamic range with smaller moving objects, ”Samsung explained in a press release via email. It adds that Smart ISO Pro also allows the capture and processing of multiple frames in high ISO, bringing it to nearly one million ISO for extremely dark scenes.

Like the previous sensor, the Isocell GN2 is also capable of ejecting 100MP images via the 50MP sensor. This is accomplished by creating “three individual layers with 50MP frames in green, red and blue” and then using a remosaic algorithm to produce a 100MP image. We’re guessing that a 108MP sensor might be better at actual 100MP + photos.

Samsung’s new 50MP sensor also comes in the video arena and captures 4K / 120fps slow-motion or 480fps video on FHD. You also get 8K / 24fps recording, which seems like a mild downgrade on paper over the GN1’s 8K / 30fps features.

Isocell GN2 is currently in mass production, which suggests that we will see it sooner rather than later. For what it’s worth, Vivo was the only brand to use the Isocell GN1 in their phones. But tipster Ice Universe reckons the new sensor will land in the Mi 11 Ultra. Xiaomi previously used an Omnivision 48MP sensor in the Mi 10 Ultra, and Omnivision recently launched its own 50MP sensor. So we have to wait and see if the new Xiaomi phone has Samsung’s sensor.
