In recent years, Waymo has operated in Phoenix, Arizona, as a fully autonomous service. Those in the Metro Phoenix area will now see Waymo One as an alternative in Google Maps.
This is part of the existing integration with third-party services when you get directions in Google Maps. Besides public transportation, Google surfaces Lifts and bicycles / scooters.
When navigating the Metro Phoenix area, you will see Waymo One listed as an option at the bottom of the screen when you select “Transit” or “Rides” as your travel destination. There is an estimated price and a link to open the app or download if you do not have it installed yet.
Waymo One was announced for Phoenix in late 201
Waymo is starting to look at offering passenger services in the Bay Area, but the expansion has otherwise been fairly slow despite extensive testing across the country. The streets need to be mapped while a place like San Francisco has much more complex driving conditions.
By deciding to integrate with Google Maps, Waymo can signal that the service in Arizona is ready to expand further. This could probably have happened at any time in recent years, but would have come with a significant increase in passengers that the new offer might not have been ready to handle yet.
