Valve cancels Artifact 2.0, makes existing versions free

Valve has stopped the development on Artifact 2.0, an updated version of the Dota card game, the company announced Thursday. Object originally launched in November 2018, where the original potential was hampered by a complex economy that bound to Object’s mechanics. Valve started the project again in March 2020, and began testing Artifact 2.0.

In a post published it ObjectSteam community page, Valve wrote:

Although we are reasonably happy that we achieved most of our goals on the game side, we have not managed to get the active player numbers to a level that justifies further development at this time. As such, we have made the tough decision to stop the development of Artifact 2.0 Beta.

Players can now download Artifact Classic or Artifact 2.0 beta, which has been renamed Artifact foundry, free. No further updates will be made in any of the versions.

“Technically Artifact foundry remains an unfinished product, but most of what is missing is polish and art ̵

1; the core of the game is there, ”said Valve. “Although both games will be playable, we do not intend to post any further game updates.”

The following set of changes will be made Artifact Classic:

The game is free for everyone to play.

All players receive each card for free. You will no longer be able to buy card packages.

Paid player existing cards have been converted to special versions of Collector’s Edition, which will remain negotiable. Marketplace integration has been removed from the game.

Paid event cards have been removed.

Customers who have paid for the game will still earn packages with Collector’s Edition cards to play; players who got the game for free will not.

Meanwhile, Artifact foundry has the following remarks:

The game is free for everyone to play.

Players gain access to cards by playing the game. All cards are earned this way; no cards or packages will be for sale and Artifact foundry the cards cannot be sold.

All the latest card art that was in the tube is now in the game.

The announcement of ObjectThe end of the development comes shortly after BioWare stated that it would no longer work with Anthem Next, a similar troubled project. While some games, like space simulator No man’s heaven, was able to recover with updates after the launch, 2021 shows that performance is not easy, even for large studios.
