The risk of choosing a match with the strongest men in the world was put on full screen last week when the strong man Eddie Hall sent gymnast Nile Wilson flying through the air after the Olympics had absorbed a hard blow to the chest.
However, this show of strength did not deter another skewed fight from taking place this week when UFC champion Dustin Poirier appeared in a sparring session with four times the world’s strongest man Brian Shaw, which Shaw just posted on his YouTube channel.
On paper, the match looks surprisingly like the Wilson-Hall stunt: Depending on where you look, Shaw is listed at about 6̵
It does not take long for Poirier to establish his faith, either. During the first moment of the video, “Diamond” is already sitting in a clinic – literally teaching Shaw to hit the heavy bags. After that, they graduate to some pad work, with Shaw happily inviting Poirier to kick the pillow as hard as he can. (He barely pinches.) When Shaw returns, you can begin to see nuances of the Wilson-Hall meeting, with even Poirier flying backwards due to the great brutal force of Shaw’s strike.
Finally, the two start practicing submissions – especially some side and back positions. “I’ll see if I can hold you down, move you around, maybe send you,” Poirier said. Comically, he stops to add: “But I just saw this guy lift a manual that weighs as much as me.”
In the ensuing quarrel, it’s impressive to see Poirier draw on his formidable MMA skills to handle Shaw’s size and strength. Conversely, you can not help but wonder what kind of destruction someone blessed with Shaws genetic gifts might be capable of with yet another basic level of MMA training.
If nothing else, he could be the referee for the long-awaited boxing match between Eddie Hall and Thor Bjornsson later this year.
