Half-Life 2: MMod is finally finished, after nine years in progress. The Half-Life 2 mod-updates with reworked gunplay, brand new weapon animations and enhanced models, and tweaks to the enemy AI to make Half-Life's fight more profound and challenging.
What is especially nice about this fashion is that you can switch just about everything it does on and off in the game menu, so if you don't like the new glowing eyes of the Combine Soldiers, you can open the menu and turn them off. But just about all the changes it makes are welcome updates to the aging game: better weapon models, newly developed VFX, better sound feedback and enhanced images help give Half-Life 2 and its subsequent episodes a shot of modern game design oomph.
To install, first go to ModDB and HL2MMod the download page. You will also make sure you have Half-Life 2, the free update, and Half-Life 2 Episodes 1
Here is a trailer that shows the new features, via Dark Side of Gaming:
As you can see, the reshaped weapon models look very good, and I really like the animations for weapon inspections and idle. Of course, if you prefer more retro looks, there is always Half-Life 2: Classic, giving the game a more 1990's look.
The download is a slim 235 megabyte, so you should have no problems there. I'm keen to try this out – it's been the dog's age since I played the Half-Life 2 games, and HL2MMod seems like the perfect excuse to jump in again.
