At 2.76 pounds (for the Core i5 version we received), Laptop 2 is exactly the same weight as its predecessor. It's also about as easy as the new Retina Display MacBook Air and Dell XPS 13 without a touchscreen.
The beautiful, beautiful 13.5-inch display from Laptop 2 shows all the small details, even in the darkest scenes of The Haunting of Hill House . The screen was a bit hard to see in hard light though. The speakers were loud and clear enough to hear the ghosts and squeaks, so I was fully immersed in the show.
I also like that Microsoft contained a USB-A connector, a Mini DisplayPort and a headphone jack. It's more than what you'll find on most competing laptops, but USB-C charging is a clear omission here. Instead of a charging port that is compatible with the cable of the phone and most other devices, you get the proprietary Surface Power connector ̵
The keys themselves are not only well distributed and comfortable to write, but also quieter than before. The sound is muted, as if Microsoft filled a pillow under each button. This is not a significant improvement, but it's nice to have when you want work without bothering your neighbors.
I was also impressed with Laptop 2's glass-covered trackpad. It is smooth, responsive, spacious and honest, a pleasure to use. I switched between virtual desktops and programs with swipe hit, two fingers rolled, and zoomed into images without layers or voids. Other PC companies should note: This is how to make a good touchpad.
Performance and Battery Life
The original laptop was delivered with Windows 10 S, which eventually kept the machine's potential back. Microsoft made it possible to upgrade to full version at no additional cost, but you must still manually install the operating system. This time, Microsoft happily went with Windows 10 Home, which unshackling the notebook from the limited app selection. Our review device features an 8th generation Intel Core i5 CPU with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, which was very powerful for most of my daily workflow. It usually involves dozens of browser tabs for research and writing, as well as FastStone Photo Resizer for batch conversion and watermarking.
Laptop 2 took about 11 seconds to convert a set of 10 images, which is in line with other eighth-core Core i5 machines I have tested. Its performance on references like PCMark, Geekbench 4 and 3DMark also falls within range of similar PCs, and actually hits the original laptop, but not so much.
Laptop 2 was also good for everyday use. It did not work when I turned between virtual desktops, opened app after app, played browser and installed Steam. Once, it glowed after I had tried to lock and unlock it in quick succession several times, but that's the only hiccups I've seen so far. Microsoft's claim that laptop 2 is 85 percent faster than the original is probably the marketing hype. It does not feel 85 percent faster, but it is still fun.
I was also impressed with how fast the laptop 2 woke up and logged in via Windows Hello. The device usually returns from sleep in less than a second and was smart enough to recognize me from different angles.
It is rated for the same 14 hour battery life as its predecessor, but the carrier 2 actually hits the original in our battery test, disconnecting after 16 hours. It's longer than the first laptop's 14.5-hour performance, plus it's better than XPS 13 (2018) and this year's MacBook Air with Retina Display. As much as I do not like the proprietary charging port, Microsofts reacts to the laptop 2 quite quickly: I traveled to 35 percent after about half an hour.

Dell XPS 13 and HP Specter 13 are excellent ultraportables. The officers There are also sharp monitors, fast performance, comfortable keyboards and longer duration batteries. XPS costs a little less than Surface Laptop 2 while Specter costs $ 100 more. Dell's system is a better machine around, except that it looks a bit dated compared to Surface Laptop.
If you're not married to Windows, you might like the recently updated MacBook Air. The keyboard takes some time to get used to, but it offers modern features, a handy fingerprint sensor and such a large trackpad.
