Dyson has a new flagship wireless handheld vacuum cleaner that joins the ranks that will illuminate dirt and dust on your floors. The Dyson V15 Detect uses a laser dust detection system to shine a light on every spot, even if you can’t see it with the naked eye.
The dust detection technology is housed in an upgraded Fluffy cleaning head (the soft roller brush designed for hard floors and comes with several Dyson hand sticks) called Slim Fluffy.
It uses laser diodes, mounted at an angle of 1.5 ° and 7.2 mm from the ground, to cast an eye-safe, short green light beam in front of the cleaning head. These specifications, according to Dyson, offer “the best contrast between dust and floor”
While other vacuum cleaner heads use light to show you where you vacuum, the Dyson V15 Detect is meant to show instead what you vacuum.

The average size of dust, plant spores and mold is about 10 microns, and according to Dyson, the V15 Detect will, well, detect small particles.
The V15 Detect is also equipped with an acoustic piezo sensor to detect sounds and vibrations of particles. Next to a new microprocessor, this sensor allows the device to monitor the size and amount of dust it absorbs. This is then displayed graphically on the V15’s built-in LCD screen on the back of the main handheld device, giving you a clear picture of the condition of your floors.
The V15 Detect also comes with a small conical brush designed specifically to clean hair and fur from upholstered surfaces (such as car seats and furniture). The shape of the cleaning tool causes threads to move towards the slimmer end without tangling with the brush, where they are sucked into the rubbish.
According to Dyson engineers, this anti-tangle process only works on smaller tools, so an extra carpet cleaning head is not an option. In theory, the small tool can be used on carpets, but it will take you longer due to its smaller footprint.
These new innovations mean that V15 Detect is best used on hard floors, but we can not wait to test it to see if it works equally well on carpets and rugs.
V15 Detect is currently only announced for select markets and is available in the US for $ 700 each (approximately £ 515 / AU $ 920). We update these articles when we know more about availability and prices in other markets.
