The long-delayed Apple TV update may offer 120Hz support

Apple TV 4K has not been updated in more than three and a half years, which is an eternity in technology. But 9to5Mac reports that the new tvOS 14.5 beta reference supports 120Hz refresh rates – a feature that no available Apple TV models have – which may indicate that Apple is working on a new version of the digital box.

While it’s not clear what Apple can use a 120Hz refresh rate for in a new Apple TV, one of the more exciting possibilities for smoother gaming, such as that offered with 120Hz support on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Apple has shown increased interest in games too late, so it would not be too much of a surprise if the new Apple TV had more game-focused features.

For example, Apple has just added a number of new games to the Apple Arcade subscription service, which allow you to play games on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV and carry your progress across platforms. And iOS 1

4.5, macOS 11.3 and tvOS 14.5 betas also all include support for PlayStation 5s DualSense controllers and the Xbox Series X controller – presumably the support will be transferred to the final software releases.

The rumored 120Hz support for Apple TV would also line up with one Bloomberg report from December, which said that Apple worked on a new Apple TV once this year with a “stronger gaming focus.” (The report also said that the new digital box would have a redesigned remote control, which will hopefully be easier to use.) Although we do not know exactly when Apple will announce this rumored device, or whether it will announce it at all, if you is in the market for a new Apple TV, you may want to wait a bit.
