LG teases itson its Press conference is not just for shows. The Korean company will release the phone later this year, according to people familiar with LG’s plans.
The short flash of the phone was the other direction of Rollable, which has a screen that extends upwards to create a larger, more tablet-like screen. Presumably, the bottom of the phone, when in landscape mode, has a mechanism that scrolls and unfolds the screen, similar to how it iswork – but on a smaller scale.
The LG Rollable only appeared in two videos that ordered the press conference, and the leaders on stage did not mention the device. This led to speculation that it was just a concept device, not ready for prime time. TCL showed up later Monday, including a larger 17-inch tablet that unfolded from both ends, like a treasure map, but they appear to be far away from an actual product.
Not so for LG Rollable. The phone would be the first device to hit the market, marking another step in the development of phone design beyond even the foldable phones that have come out in the last two years. After many years of pushing the same design of metal boxes, the telephone industry has been keen to experiment with different shapes and concepts to rekindle some excitement.
After years of conservative phones, LG has shown a renewed interest in playing with the various concepts. Last fall, the company launched, which contained two screens stacked together, with the top one that could be swung out in horizontal mode. CNET editor Lynn La said that after coming across the weird design, she found it useful for multitasking and video recording.
Once a major player among the best smartphone manufacturers, LG’s reputation, especially with flagship phones, has gained a hit as major players such as Samsung and Huawei have passed it by. Smaller companies like OnePlus have been able to generate more sound, so LG needs something to start the excitement over the mobile lineup.
LG has also always followed the bigger rival Samsung, which has cemented itself in the collapsible category with the Z family of smartphones. Last year it launchedand .
For once, LG may have a leg up on the competition.
