During a replay stream earlier this month, Doom Eternal director Hugo Martin was asked if the team had ever considered developing a female Doom Slayer for the game. His answer was surprisingly thorough.
“I’ve been thinking about it, actually,” Martin told Bethesda community chief Joshua Boyle after a viewer question. “I think if we did, I wish it was deadly. I think it’s interesting how it would affect the killing of glory, what kind of weapon she would have, fighting style. All aggression, certainly, but a different type of aggression. I would really strive to let it affect the gameplay in a way that was meaningful. I have definitely put a lot of thought into it. ”
The people behind the 2016s Doom and the 2020s Doom Eternal has referred to his main character as a Ferrari, in that game as Doom Slayer is fun at all speeds. Martin said they want to find out similar types of references for any character they develop, including a hypothetical female Doom Slayer.
“How would that affect things?” Martin added. What kind of analogies can you draw from it and let it affect the experience? That would definitely be cool. ”
The identity of DoomThe main character – formerly known as Doomguy before it was reinvented as Doom Slayer along with the modern, story-oriented reboot – has never had much to say for first-person shooters. He is simply a vessel for the player’s own desire to destroy a bunch of demons as brutally as possible. That said, it’s pretty cool that Martin has focused on developing a female counterpart, and it should be interesting to see if these ideas take hold in the future. Doom projects.
