Alpina has never seen a reason to distinguish between luxury and high-performance cars, and this is no less true of the latest confectionery.
The German carmaker has just unveiled a new BMW soup, the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe. The stately car is easily the most luxurious entry in the new 8-Series lineu, and it happens to be one of the most powerful thanks to the tough V-8 engine.
In an instant, the Alpina B8 does not look so different from the standard B8 Gran Coupé. That’s good, because the five-door is already one of the most elegant cars in the BMW series. There are, of course, some changes. Both ends of the vehicle are adjusted, with a larger air intake and a diffuser at the front and a lip spoiler at the rear. There are also special Alpina decals and labels, as well as its trademark 21-inch, 20-spoke forged wheels, which are wrapped in Pirelli performance tires.
The interior has also been given a subtle makeover. Almost everything – including multifunctional sports seats in the front, steering wheel and instrument panel – is covered or accented with merino leather nicely designed in Alpina’s own workshop. Behind the wheel you will find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The center console is topped by BMW’s 10.3 – inch infotainment system with touch screen, from which you can access the navigation and driver assistance system. A Harman Kardon surround sound system also comes standard.
While the fleet of lavish amenities gives the Alpina B8 bona fide luxury appeal, the animal mill under the hood can be even more impressive. The engine is the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that was found in the M850i and M8 model. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it is specially tuned to generate 612 horsepower and 590 feet of torque. This makes it the second most powerful 8-series car, just behind the M8 with the competition package, which delivers 617 hp. It is also quite fast, able to accelerate from zero to 60 km / h in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 km / h.
The Alpina B8 Gran Coupé is expected to arrive in the US later this spring. In addition to being the most luxurious entry in the 8 Series, it is also the most expensive with a starting price of $ 140,895.
