Apple has inserted a small sensor into the HomePod Mini that can measure the temperature and humidity in a room, according to a report on Monday from Bloomberg. The component, which does not appear to have been announced before, could help strengthen Apple’s smart home ambitions.

The HomePod Mini was launched in November, costs $ 99 compared to the $ 300 HomePod original. The Siri-powered smart speaker came with new features, including one intercom and stereo pairing. Earlier this month, Apple said it was exit the original HomePod and focus their efforts on the Mini.

Apple has internally discussed getting the sensor to send temperature and humidity readings to Internet-connected thermostats, so that adjustments can be made based on current conditions, according to Bloomberg. It can reportedly also let the HomePod Mini trigger actions, such as turning on a fan, based on the temperature in a room.

According to Bloomberg, the temperature sensor is made by Texas Instruments, and is located along the lower edge of the HomePod Mini near the power cable.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
