The 21 most anticipated indie games coming in 2021

There were many weird and fantastic indie games to look forward to in 2020, and I am happy to report that there is much more to keep an eye on in 2021.

It was exciting to look through these upcoming games. There are so many interesting, weird and gorgeous games to look forward to in the new year. All the games on this list are scheduled to come out in 2021, each equally ambitious when it comes to reaching their goals. We have some noir-style detective thrillers, some teenage anxiety and some hand-drawn joys.

Of course, these are not all the amazing Indians coming out in 2021

– there are simply too many to list. We will continue our coverage of indie games to play in 2021, and I would like you to share games you are looking forward to in the comments below.

Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance

From developer Rocket Adrift, Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance is about a shy, difficult teenager looking for love in the 1990s. It’s a dating simulator and visual novel, in which players – like the main character Stella – make friends with a bunch of cryptic teenagers: a fairy, talking velociraptor and a bigfoot. It’s described as a ’90s teenage drama, and it looks like that; it has everything from dramatic phone calls, preparatory sessions and cassette tapes. The art style also looks incredible.

Saturnalia

Saturnalia is a stylish survival horror game coming to the Epic Games Store in 2021. The game takes place in Sardinia, Italy in 1989, in an old village with a scary ritual – and people disappear every year. What stands out the most is Saturnaliahis art style. I have not seen anything like it!

She Dreams Elsewhere

She dreams elsewhere, as you may have guessed, takes place in a dream. The indie game is described as an adventure role-playing game, and has a surreal vibe set – the perfect setting for a bad dream. The music, composed by Mimi Page, is perfect.

She dreams elsewhere coming to Mac, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC and Xbox consoles in 2021.

Farewell Volcano High

The Canadian developer KO_OP is working on Farewell Volcano Hight, a narrative game about a bunch of dinosaurs in high school when they find out life with the exam coming. It is described as a movie “about the end of an era, and the beginning of a love story.”

Farewell Volcano High coming to Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2021.

Season

Season, from developer Scavengers Studio, was recently announced during The Game Awards 2020, and it was one of the prominent games from the event. The game looks like a wonderful atmospheric, with a woman collecting memories from a beautiful, mysterious world.

Season coming in 2021.

Nuts

Nuts is a game about watching squirrels. It has a very distinct art style – it looks amazing. When he looks at these squirrels, the player will “uncover the secret that the curious creatures are hiding.” Personally, I am very spent.

Nuts will be out in 2021 on Windows PC.

Nepe Boy commits tax evasion

The name says it all – Nepe Boy commits tax evasion. There are riddles, crops, battles, but most of all, no fees. “Tear down a corrupt vegetable government,” according to the Steam page. Who is not down with it?

Chinatown Detective Agency

Sure, we have a huge cyberpunk video game out at the end of 2020. But there’s more in the genre, and you can watch it in Chinatown Detective Agency. It takes place in 2032 in a stylish, futuristic Singapore. Created by Singapore-based developer General Interactive Co., it looks like an interesting future.

Like the others on this list, it comes in 2021.

Venba

From developer Visai Games, Venba is described as a “narrative cooking game”, which was set in the 1980s in Canada. It centers on an Indian mother, with players tasked with cooking and remembering lost recipes. It’s a story about “family, love, loss and more,” the developer wrote on Steam. It looks amazing.

It will be released in November 2021.

SkateBird

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 kept me out for a while, but the skateboard game is me actually looking forward to is SkateBird, from developer Glass Bottom Games. Birds on a skateboard! Birds! On! Skateboard!

You can wish list the game on Steam now, but it also comes to Nintendo Switch and other consoles.

30XX

The colorful world of 30XXlooks fast and intense, and it has a great soundtrack. It looks very much like Mega Man X, but according to the developer, it has the “replayability of a modern Roguelike.” Co-op is also available. If you liked it 20XX, you will also like this game.

You can add it to your wish list on Steam.

Mundaun

I have been impressed Mundaun’s visually since it was announced. The game is pencil-drawn and tells a horror story “set in a dark, secluded valley of the Alps.” The aesthetic is certainly enough to draw people in, but the story and the gameplay make this a game to watch.

From developer Hidden Fields, Mundaun is available on the wish list on Steam.

ANNO: Mutationem

Another cyberpunk style game, ANNO: Mutationem comes from developer ThinkingStars and publisher Lightning Games. It has a very cool style – a mix of 2D and 3D graphics.

Wish list ANNO: Mutationem on Steam.

Chaotic time

From developer BOBBY, Chaotic time looks very stylish – a black and white interstellar strategy game in real time. “Take on the role of a hyper-advanced AI system designed by one of humanity’s largest (and now extinct) mega-corporations,” said the developer. “Land the Earth’s last escape ship on a new world and rebuild human civilization from scratch.”

It comes to Apple iOS devices.

Hot Pot for One

When it’s safe to do so, the first restaurant I visit at my local hot pot spot. Instead, I eat hot pot with my partner at home, and look forward to experiencing the virtual version of it when Hot Pot for One coming out next year.

It comes to Windows PC.

Spine

There are many noir, detective games coming out in 2021, however Spine stands out. From developer EggNut and published by Raw Fury, Spine Have you played as a raccoon private eye named Howard Lotor. The pixel art style is amazing, and I look forward to trying this stylish point-and-click adventure game.

Check it out on Steam.

Model

I played Model at PAX East in 2020, and has been eagerly awaiting the launch date. The game first appeared in 2011 at the Game Developers Conference, and the ingenious design became an instant hit. Finally, it is a complete game, based on an innovative and interesting puzzle style.

Model comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

Book of Travels

Developer Might and Delight describes Book of Travels as a “unique social role experience that does not hold your hand.” It is set in a fairytale world that is open to exploration – “no overall goal and no real beginning or end” – where the player creates his own journey.

I’m curious to see how the multiplayer elements play out when this comes out for Windows PC in 2021.

Dordogne

If there is a way to describe Dordogne, I would go with fantastic. The game has a fantastic watercolor style that I was immediately attracted to. The narrative adventure game has the player engaging in “childhood memories”, according to the Steam site. It is set in the present and past, but each of these worlds looks equally beautiful.

It’s coming to Windows PC in 2021. Wish list it on Steam.

Teacup

Teacup stars Teacup, a very shy frog. The whimsical world is filled with other animals to meet and many puzzles to solve. It has a wonderful aesthetic, with the healthy journey of finding herbs to make tea.

See more information on Steam.

Tunche

Another beautiful hand-drawn game, Tunche is a hack-and-slash roguelike through the Amazon jungle. It has a co-op mode for four players and looks like lots of fun. “Choose one of the five characters, master the skill sets and the ultimate abilities, defeat epic bosses, and discover the secrets of the mysterious Amazon jungle,” developer LEAP Game Studios wrote on Steam. “The game is centered around high-risk, high-reward battles, and has a ‘stylish’ class system.”

The game will hit consoles and Windows PC in March.
