There were many weird and fantastic indie games to look forward to in 2020, and I am happy to report that there is much more to keep an eye on in 2021.
It was exciting to look through these upcoming games. There are so many interesting, weird and gorgeous games to look forward to in the new year. All the games on this list are scheduled to come out in 2021, each equally ambitious when it comes to reaching their goals. We have some noir-style detective thrillers, some teenage anxiety and some hand-drawn joys.
Of course, these are not all the amazing Indians coming out in 2021
Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance
From developer Rocket Adrift, Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance is about a shy, difficult teenager looking for love in the 1990s. It’s a dating simulator and visual novel, in which players – like the main character Stella – make friends with a bunch of cryptic teenagers: a fairy, talking velociraptor and a bigfoot. It’s described as a ’90s teenage drama, and it looks like that; it has everything from dramatic phone calls, preparatory sessions and cassette tapes. The art style also looks incredible.
Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance coming early in 2021.
Saturnalia is a stylish survival horror game coming to the Epic Games Store in 2021. The game takes place in Sardinia, Italy in 1989, in an old village with a scary ritual – and people disappear every year. What stands out the most is Saturnaliahis art style. I have not seen anything like it!

The name says it all – Nepe Boy commits tax evasion. There are riddles, crops, battles, but most of all, no fees. “Tear down a corrupt vegetable government,” according to the Steam page. Who is not down with it?

Sure, we have a huge cyberpunk video game out at the end of 2020. But there’s more in the genre, and you can watch it in Chinatown Detective Agency. You can wish list the game on Steam now, but it also comes to Nintendo Switch and other consoles.
The colorful world of 30XXlooks fast and intense, and it has a great soundtrack. It looks very much like Mega Man X, but according to the developer, it has the “replayability of a modern Roguelike.” Co-op is also available. If you liked it 20XX, you will also like this game.
You can add it to your wish list on Steam.
I have been impressed Mundaun’s visually since it was announced. The game is pencil-drawn and tells a horror story “set in a dark, secluded valley of the Alps.” The aesthetic is certainly enough to draw people in, but the story and the gameplay make this a game to watch.
From developer Hidden Fields, Mundaun is available on the wish list on Steam.
Another cyberpunk style game, ANNO: Mutationem comes from developer ThinkingStars and publisher Lightning Games. It has a very cool style – a mix of 2D and 3D graphics.

I played Model at PAX East in 2020, and has been eagerly awaiting the launch date. The game first appeared in 2011 at the Game Developers Conference, and the ingenious design became an instant hit. Finally, it is a complete game, based on an innovative and interesting puzzle style.

If there is a way to describe Dordogne, I would go with fantastic. The game has a fantastic watercolor style that I was immediately attracted to. The narrative adventure game has the player engaging in “childhood memories”, according to the Steam site. It is set in the present and past, but each of these worlds looks equally beautiful.
