Respawn has added a new Survival Slot Button alternative to the settings in Apex Legends. This means that users of the controller can now go back to using the d-pad to inspect their weapon.
In the Chaos Theory update, Respawn added a whole new element to Apex Legends: the heat shield. Next to the mobile respawn lighthouse, this item goes into a new slot in your inventory in battle, called survival slot.
First added, this track was automatically mapped to the d-pad entrance which was previously used for inspection of weapons and heirlooms. People on the mouse and keyboard can easily transform the inspection prompt into another key or mouse button, but people on the controllers only have so many buttons. So weapon and heirloom inspection was transformed into the quick wheel.
So this meant that unless you had a controller with extra paddles to work with, the addition of the survival track removed your ability to admire firearms or heirlooms in the middle of a fight. Not very important in a match king, remember, but it was a fun pastime while hiding in the corner or a way to show off the team you just killed when they look at you.
However, now with the new option, people on checkpoints can check if they want the d-pad input to access the survival track or the inspection prompt. When the option is off, you must manually open your warehouse to use heat shields or mobile respawn lighthouses, as you used to do for ultimate accelerators. But when the option is turned off, you can again use the d-pad to inspect your weapon or heirloom.
The downside, of course, is that pressing the d-pad quickly instead of stopping to open the menu is easier to do as you move ̵
