Apple's Mac Mini is still the most affordable way to get a Mac, although the base price is $ 300 more than the 2014 base model. Given the inclusion of four Thunderbolt 3 ports, it's hard to compare with the cheapest Wintel hardware, and price and performance are competitive with Intel's NUC hardware for the first time.

The six-core Core i7 processor can be as low as $ 1099 and we feel this model will be very popular in the scientific community and for users who are not afraid to add external storage and add own RAM. But, like the Core i9 in the MacBook Pro, it's a lot of heat in a very small cabinet when it's under load.

Then, like the MacBook Pro, we ran some tests to see how thermally restricted enclosure is. Our test device has 256GB of NVMe storage and 32GB of RAM, retail for $ 1899.

Performance

Apple has chosen to use a desktop chip-i3-8100H, i5-8400B, or i7-8700B, depending on the model.

While a processor is cool, it will exceed its base clock speed up to the speed of increase. This generates more heat, of course. As the heat builds faster than a cooling system can remove it, the processor will delay to help heat the heat together with the cooling system.

We tested the i7 Mac mini using the same exact CPU stress test we ran on the 2018 i9 MacBook Pro. We drove the Cinebench R15 5 times back, without the processor being cooled, while watching the processor's clock speed and temperatures to see if there's a gas damper.

Mac mini was well ventilated without a fan blowing on the outside of the case at all. The office was a steady 21C throughout the test period.

Shortly after the first test started, the CPU clock rate increased to a maximum of 4.26 GHz. Shortly thereafter, the temperature reached 100C, with a drop in clock speed maintained at 3.5 GHz, still above the 3.2 GHz base clock. It finished with the first round with a score of 1188.

Ever after the second round started, the clock frequency went below 3, 5 GHz, which shows that the processor starts to slow down a little more to keep the temperature down. For the fourth race, we noticed the clock speed maintained a range of 3.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz before completing with a score of 1103 points. While the score fell from 1188 to 1103 from the first to the fourth round, there is clearly some effect from thermal control, albeit a little one of around 7.6 percent.

Return to older testing, with the i9 MacBook Pro, our first round was 1051, Our second score was 978, and our final score was 1011, which showed similar thermal gas traction properties after Apple updated firmware shortly after launch.

We repeated the test with an i3 Mac mini with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, plus another i7 Mac mini with 8GB RAM, 128GB of storage space and an external Vega 64 GPU connected via Thunderbolt 3 with corresponding percentage drops over time , which suggests that eGPUs or the slower i3 processor have little effect on the thermal state inside the case. Most of the eGPUs we have tested have BlackMagic, which is higher under load than the Mac mini var.

Small case, excellent thermal management

With a simple binary "yes or no" perspective, the Mac mini clearly melts out of the thermal state. But this is not a "gate", conspiracy or any of that kind. Everything with an Intel processor will adjust the speed based on thermal condition, with the severity of the downturn and the effect on performance, depending on how much money you have invested in a cooling system if you have built the machine yourself.

All this said, we are impressed with how the performance on the Mac mini stopped when the job evolved and the time was crossed. The clock frequency was on average at around 3.4 GHz to 3.5 GHz below 100 percent CPU workload with the i7 models, but it did not go below the 3.2 GHz base clock speed, making it a solid performer even when under pressure long time
