Super Smash Bros. Ultimate extended hands-on: A beefy Nintendo brawler

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feels like the series's strongest fighter yet, and I got the impression before Nintendo the villains like King K. Rool and Dark Samus were put on roster.

] Early versions of the game have entered the fans' hands on more events already currently on Gamescom this week. My impression here comes from the San Diego Comic-Con version that was shown last month ̵

1; which included early look at Ridley and Breath of the Wild version of Link.

During a series of four-player matchups, I found out that the game's sped-up style meant either to ruin my opponents quickly or to fly through the scene after being shot out of a playable Splatoon Inkling to the Bomberman Assistance Trophy.

Faster characters moved so fast I sometimes had a harder time to keep track of where they were on stage. And taking control of the slower but more powerful signs led to another situation where I had trouble tapping a blow to a fast fighter, but when it was connected, they were almost KOed.

And if you're lucky enough to break open a smashball that lets you release a big Final Smash movement, get close to your opponents first, or you may end up wasting the attack. Final Smash moves like Ridley blows a sign against Samus ships or Clouds sword attack launch quickly after you press the attack button and if you're not careful you can not beat anyone. This happened to me when I checked Cloud; Somehow I did not only miss all but also caused him to fly off the stage.

The new version of Link is so far my favorite character to play with as I felt that the new version of his bombing could be thrown farther than in previous matches while retaining many sword attacks that make him famous.

The find Pokemon Trainer, who no longer needs to account for his or her Pokemon stamina, is another favorite since you can switch between Charizard, Ivysaur and Squirtle faster than ever. As a result, you can quickly switch between a heavy, medium and easy sign that suits your needs through a battle.

Ridley is both very fast and surprisingly fragile for a horrible space dragon. I found him to be a bit unmanageable to control, but with very strong attacks when I could make them land. Ike also had super strong attack events, but performed them slowly, which required careful timing.

Back on the classic roster, Mario feels largely the same as in previous Smash games. He jumps. He stops. He is spraying water from his Super Mario Sunshine water tank. Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey is here too, but from my playing time it felt that the addition of the living hat mainly allows some of Odyssey's colorful costumes to be available.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate release on December 7th. The game is already set to include all the characters from Super Smash Bro's history along with addition to Castlevania's Simon Belmont and the former King K. Rool. Check out more Smash Bros. Ultimate matchups in the Nintendo YouTube videos embedded in this story and game photos in the gallery below.
