Since I moved to work from home in March last year, my laptop and monitor have become a bit … unmanageable. I have at least three different windows open for my professional Gmail, Google Drive, and personal Gmail account, each with a variety of tabs. Add it to a new Outlook account for work, and things get a little crowded on my desktop, even with a monitor connected.

Enter Kiwi for Gmail, an app that lets you move all your Google products that would normally live in your browser – Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides – to your desktop, as a separate, standalone application. The app acts as a hub for your personal and professional Google accounts, including calendars, files and documents, so you can work in the Google ecosystem without opening a web browser. Released in February, version 3.0 includes new features such as browser extensions such as Zoom, offline mode and calendar alerts.

In 2020, in the middle of pandemic and the increase in teleworking, Kiwi for Gmail saw an over 70% increase in the daily average number of users of the free version of the app, according to parent company Zive.

If you are a Mac or Windows user, there is a free “small” version that allows you to connect to a Gmail account. Or upgrade to the full version for $ 30 a year to connect up to six accounts. Right now, the company is running a 25% discount for Mac and Windows users.

1. Go to KiwiforGmail.com and click Got started.

2. Under Basics, click Sign up. Click at the end of the registration process download.

3. When done, press Open.

4. Click Next through each of the instruction pages. Then click Got started.

5. You will then get some pop-ups to adjust your settings. Choose whether you want to send anonymous usage data back to the company, how you want the write button and window to appear, and any extensions.

6. Sign in to one of your Gmail accounts. It appears in the app in the same way as in the browser, but with several options along the left sidebar, so you can access the calendar, Disk and contacts directly.

7. The account is displayed as a tab at the top right, with the number of unread messages displayed in the tab. If you upgrade to the paid version, you will see several tabs and can switch back and forth between them as you wish.
