Carrie Fisher gets one last moment in the galactic sun.
She returns to Star Wars: Episode IX with director J.J. Abrams uses previously unused recordings of late actress to conclude the story of Leia Organa.
The news came with today's caste announcement for the film, which confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will represent the role of Lando Calrissian and Mark Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker.
Newcomers to the cast include Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant in unspecified roles along with recurring castmates Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd.
Ackie, who won a British independent film prize last year for the most promising newcomer, is best known to play the largely stupid housemaid Anna in Grant is a veteran character actor known for everything from his breakthrough in 1
The real surprise of the announcement was the decision to return to the Leia story and use previous recordings to Do It.
The movie of Fisher, who dies in December 2016 after completion on The Last Jedi, is all unutilized material from her performance in 2015 The Force Awakens.
Ever since Fisher's unlimited past, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said that they would not transform or use digitization to keep the character going.
Now Abrams says that it was not possible to close the story without finding a way to bring back her character in any way.
"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher," said Abrams in a statement. "To find a truly satisfactory conclusion to the Skywalker saga without avoiding us. We should never transform or use a CG character. With the support and blessing of her daughter Billie, we have found a way to honor Carry's legacy and role like Leia in episode IX by using untrue recordings we shot together in episode VII. "
Lourd costars as resistance lover Connix in the series and was often in scenes with his mother.
