Deathloop is one of the few big PlayStation 5 exclusives to be released this year, but it was never to remain just on Sony’s next generation console. We now know exactly when the exclusivity period ends: September 14, 2022.
Lately Deathloop trailer, which first appeared at Sony’s recent “State of Play” was aired July 8, revealing a very short, easy-to-miss text at the end of the video officially Deathloop will only be console exclusive to PS5 for one year. After September 14, 2022, the game can be viewed on other consoles. (Something to remember: Deathloop has always been planned to release on PC at launch.) It is not difficult to guess what “other consoles” mean in this context.
Deathloop is published by Bethesda and developed by Arkane, both of which are now owned by Xbox. Based on how Microsoft handles first-party games, it is very likely that shortly after Deathloop is the exclusivity agreement is over, it goes to Gamepass for Xbox Series X / S.
First announced at E3 2019, Deathloop is the next match from Dishonest developers Arkane Studios. When it was first revealed, no platforms were mentioned. But the following year we learned that Deathloop and another Bethesda PS5 game, Ghostwire Tokyo, would have been time-limited exclusives. The question, of course, was how long would this window last.
Things got more complicated when Microsoft completed its acquisition of Bethesda earlier this year, although. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer confirmed that Microsoft and Xbox would respect all of Bethesda’s current contracts with other companies. Still, one of the biggest PS5 exclusives was one timed exclusive is being developed by an Xbox studio. This even led to official Xbox Twitter account, hyping up a PlayStation event yesterday. Weird times, folks.
Losing a console exclusive is not always a big deal. But considering how really get the next generation game it’s right now, finally losing Deathloop (on top of losing Godfall) is not good for Sony, which needs to convince people to spend money on a new machine. The best way to do that has generally been fancy, new exclusive games. But with big Sony titles like Horizon: Forbidden West and others coming to PS5 and PS4, it’s hard to make a good case for why someone even needs to buy a new console right now. (Assuming you can even find one.)
Microsoft is undoubtedly doing the worst job of producing the next generation of hits, with essentially zero new, exclusive next generation Xbox games out and not many are coming soon. (One of few, The medium, will hit the PS5 in September.) Even the next big one Hello come to Xbox One in addition to Series X / S. But Microsoft has also begun to focus on Game Pass and offer Xbox on multiple platforms such as phones, making it less dependent on large exclusive. Sony, on the other hand, needs them more than ever as news about indie devs who are upset in the company continues to grow and more next generation games are delayed.
Of course, until you can easily buy the next generation console, for most people none of this has anything to say. And now that it becomes almost impossible to even buy current machines, like the PS4 Pro, it seems that most people, not just Sony, will miss out on exclusive great console games.
