During Sonic’s livestream on its 30th anniversary, Sega teased a new Sonic game from the Sonic Team that was due out sometime in 2022.
Without naming the game, Sega revealed that this new Sonic game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The lively accompanying trailer showed nothing beyond the hedgehog running through a forest, and a mysterious symbol:
Sonic fans soon ran around the inside of the trailer looking for clues. Fortunately, Sega even came in with a press release called the game.
“Announces new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Sonic Rangers, additional details on Netflix Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and much more!”
It seems like the Sonic Rangers review was wrong. The press release currently available for online viewing does not include the Sonic Rangers name:
“Announces new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and more details about Netflix Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and more!”
Eurogamer was told this morning that the original press release we received is an older version that was shared incorrectly, but there is no further information about Sonic Rangers right now.
So it seems that someone accidentally included the name of the next big Sonic game in the first PR email that rounded up the announcements from the virtual Sonic theme. Oops!
Of course, Sonic Rangers as the title does not tell us much. Can the word “rangers” indicate a more open play area than we are used to from previous Sonic games?
