Samsung may unveil the new Wear OS watch operating system later this month at the MWC 2021 virtual conference. The company has indicated this in its MWC session description, discovered by 9to5Google. The session will take place on 28 June.
The description is:
The Galaxy ecosystem with connected devices, services and partnerships gives people choice, freedom and opportunity. We are rethinking smartwatches, and creating new opportunities for both developers and consumers. And we improve security and give people the protection they need in an open and connected world.
Samsung’s Tizen smartwatch operating system may be a known quantity that leads to some of the best smartwatches, but the company has chosen to adapt closer to Google in recent weeks. The next entry in Samsung’s Galaxy Watch will run an operating system that is heavily influenced by Google.
Although we have not seen much of what this operating system will offer yet, we know at least Samsung will introduce it to the world in early summer. The company will also show how it plans to refine the smartwatch OS, and create a coherent design with the existing equipment.

One mistake Google made was to let Android OEMs build their own custom versions of Android while not allowing them to do the same for portable devices. It was seen as a good thing, and many can see it that way from a consumer level; users were guaranteed a smooth experience no matter which manufacturer they purchased from.
As a manufacturer hoping to capture an Apple-like experience with its own device, Wear OS may not have been appealing since it took a strict Google approach. There has been a small level of customization with devices like the OPPO Watch, but in general, all Wear OS smartwatches had the same experience. Google’s use of this new, more open path is likely to attract more OEMs back to its site. Some may think it is too little and too late, but if Samsung leads, others will certainly follow.
We will get our first look at this new operating system in the coming weeks.
