Capcom has removed the appearance of the Japanese “Rising Sun” flag and the Hong Kong flag from Street Fighter II; which is included as part of Capcom Arcade Stadium collection.

Twitter user @pomegd posted the noted differences after the first discovery that the Rising Sun motif was removed from E. Honda̵

7;s scene in Street Fighter II. The stage normally contains works of art of Mount Fuji with a rising sun in the background, but there was space left instead.

The flag was speculatively removed due to its use as the official flag of the Imperial Japanese Army until and the Navy until it was disbanded in 1945 after World War II. The Japanese military has since been replaced by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), which still uses the Rising Sun motif on its flags.

After further investigation, @pomegd also found that Hong Kong-born fighter aircraft Fei Long had the flag changed in character selection. Previously, Fei Long had the flag of Hong Kong under British rule in the original release from 1993. This was changed to the official Bauhinia flag in Hong Kong as recently as 2018 in Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.

It is worth noting that Hong Kong’s status as a “Special Administrative Region” has not changed in the last two years. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection In particular, the flag may have been changed in response to China’s stricter stance on Hong Kong in the wake of the protest against the law on criminal law and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

China has cracked down on pro-Hong Kong messages since the protests and has gone so far as to ban Animal Crossing: New Horizons due to the features that allow rudimentary communication. Shanghai-based developers miHoYo have also censored the phrases “Hong Kong” and “Taiwan” in their game Genshin impact.

Capcom Arcade Stadium released February 17 on the Nintendo Switch.
