Out now on PC, about “the next few weeks” on PS4.
Frictional Games’ Desert Fear Amnesia: Rebirth has just received a free new Adventure Mode, which removes the game’s life-threatening monster encounters, fear of jumping and darkness for those who are interested in experiencing the story without fear of fainting the dead.
Amnesia: Rebirth – the third game in the series, which followed up on Frictional̵
Its story – focusing on the protagonist Tasi Trianon as she crosses the vast expanse of territory, pulls together fragments of the past – earned much praise for her release (Eurogamer reviewer Vikki Blake called it an “impressive horror undermining” and a story that “grabbed me completely to the credits rolled “), and Rebirth’s new Adventure Mode aims to make it more accessible to all.
Adventure Mode in particular goes significantly further than the largely similar Safe Mode that Frictional introduced for sci-fi horror SOMA back in 2017. Like it after the launch add-on, it removes all life-threatening encounters with monsters, but also brews the upsetting sounds and visual effects which would normally affect Tasis fear levels.
In addition, Rebirth’s surroundings – often incredibly dark in the original version, which require an often volatile light source to penetrate – have all been lit “to a point where you do not want the same feeling of claustrophobia and fear, so you can explore freely. without worrying about monsters or Tasi’s mental state. “
Frictional says that while Amensia: Rebirth’s serious themes and nervous atmosphere are retained, “the new mode feels much more like an Indiana Jones-type adventure in places where it would otherwise be more of a horror experience”. Adventure mode is not just about subtractions either; it also introduces a series of bonus puzzles designed to enhance the sense of adventure and deliver an experience closer to a “true Lovecraftian mystery adventure novel.”
“We believe that everyone who loves a good story-driven adventure game will be interested in this new mode,” says Frictionals Fredrik Olsson. “Not everyone is in horror, and we do not want it to stop people from experiencing the history of Tasi.”
Amnesia: Rebirth’s new Adventure Mode is now available on PC and will arrive on PlayStation in “the next few weeks”. To track arrival, the game is currently discounted by 40% on Steam, GOG and Epic Store. Those looking for more scares can also pick up Frictional’s impressive back catalog with 80% off.
