Razer introduces a new flagship phone, Razer Phone 2, which is intended to establish a foothold in the new gaming phone market. I had the chance to spend some time with Razer's new flagship and found that the new phone looks almost identical with the first one, but it has a new aluminum frame that has gone through a complete structural revolution. Razer Phone 2 is meant to be a game phone so there have also been relevant screen and sound improvements, but also useful add-ons that were not in the phone last year as waterproof.
Game phones increase in number, but not in maturity. Manufacturers of game computers ̵
While many skilled flagship smartphones exist, these companies hope that they will be able to do enough to improve the gaming experience. This year, Razer does not replay the game phone, instead replaces signature features like Chroma and collaborates with mobile game studies to optimize games for Razer Phone 2 to continue.
Internally, here's what's changed with Razer Phone 2. The new brain of this game phone is a Snapdragon 845 chipset – what most other Android flagships use – Clock at 2.8GHz with an Adreno 630 visual chip. To handle heat dissipation, Razer has a scaled-down version of the steam chamber cooling technology used on the Blade 15 laptop, designed to keep the phone from getting too hot.
A significant upgrade to 8GB of RAM, LTE gigabit antennas for faster data, 64GB of storage and a massive 4,000 mAh battery, the device flows. Razer Phone 2 runs Android 8.1 with Nova Launcher by default, but Android Pie is currently in testing and scheduled as an over-the-air upgrade. A new flagship Android phone should not start with an outdated OS, but it is unfortunately the situation here.
Game phones need content, and it has been a fact that the best mobile games have been on iOS, not Android. Even when Android has matured and the game's release dates have been closer to each other, it still has not emerged as the leading mobile gaming platform. Razer tells me that he is aware of this issue and collaborates with game studies not only to optimize his games for Razer Phone – PUBG Mobile Rival: Crimson x Chaos Marvel Future Fight and ] RuneScape to name a few – but also exclusive content for the future.
But maybe one of the best upgrades is something you might not notice from the pictures: how much easier is it to keep this time. The original Razer Phone had an all-round design – it was a literal candy bar – paired with a large size making sure it was not the most comfortable phone to hold. Although the updated design is almost identical, the edges have been rounded a bit to give a slightly better feel thanks to the edges that do not push into the hand.
There is also a glass back now, so Razer Phone 2 can charge wirelessly. Phone 2 will work on your own charging mat or Razer's new Chroma $ 99 charging stand powered by USB-C that can plug the phone up or lay it flat. Razer is aware that some of his current and potential customers may not be fans of the glass, so I have been notified of a matte finish with more storage, but otherwise identical details are in the works.
Also I Could not Believe It, but it happens: Chroma on a phone. Razer replaced the triple hose logo on the back with a larger Chroma backlit version that acts as the warning flasher while removing the warning light from the front. It supports 16.8 million colors (just like other Razer Chroma-supported products) and can use static, breathing or spectrum cycling lighting modes. Do you need it? Not really. Is that cool?
The 5.7-inch screen this year has also seen improvements in HDR coverage and brightness while maintaining the 2560 x 1440 qHD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate for consistent and smooth visualization. It's a nice screen with many pixels for sure, but I would not pass further judgment on it before I see it outside the lights of a conference room.
So last year, big speakers flank both at the top and bottom of the screen. While Razer believes that the size and position are large because they give the user an area to seize the phone, I think they are removing the screen. However, Razer has Dolby Atmos support from the two front speakers and a 24-bit DAC over USB-C. Razer Phone 2's audio quality is something that can be useful for casual awareness in games, or just watching Netflix.
The game hardware company also switched to Sony camera sensors with optical image stabilization – both 12 megapixels, one angle and another common – for Razer Phone 2, puts them on the back and adds a new, better camera app. With the few pictures I took, it seems that there has been an improvement in clarity and color rendering. Razer also says that it has made significant improvements in subject photography mode, but I have not had the opportunity to test it thoroughly.
Ultimately, It Works As if Razer really believes that those who take mobile games seriously – especially in Asia – will be looking for the competitive edge that a gaming-oriented smartphone can give them. Looking at the competition, Razer Phone 2 is not as easy to look as the Asus ROG phone, despite having no modular functionality. It mimics the same strategy that Razer brought with Blade 15 – Subtlety of Attention – while competitors continue to release laptops with "gamer styling"; they make the same mistakes with game phones.
Razer Phone 2 will be sold unlocked for $ 799 in the United States from Razer and its online partners; abroad, your phone will see some transport partners in China. Regulations start today, with shipping dates to be announced.
