Porsche debuted the new 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport today, and as you expect it gets a healthy boost in horsepower. What is a bit more unexpected is that it is made with natural fibers, and Porsche offers two versions, one for amateur competitions and another for top racers.
The sports car packs a 3.8 liter flat six good at 420 hp, up 35 hp from its predecessor introduced in late 2015. The torque comes in at 313 lb-ft. Like the old version, a six-speed dual-clutch gives PDK transmission power to the rear wheels. The 911 GT3 Cup gives its lightweight coil suspension to the new GT4 Clubsport. Helps the car stop is the six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers that squeeze onto 1
The "Trackday" version is suitable for private track events, and features a fixed shock absorber setup, air conditioning, a roof rescue hatch, a handheld fire extinguisher and an 80-liter FIA-compliant safety fuel cell. Competence models are bred for more hardcore racing at national and international events. Their shock absorbers can be adjusted in three steps, and the FIA-compatible fuel tank has a capacity of 115 liters for long distance runs. The "competition" version also features a quick release steering wheel adopted from the 911 GT3 R, an automatic fire extinguishing system, an integrated air jack system for faster pit stops, and a brake balancing system that allows you to adjust the brake valve between the front and rear axles. All models have a roll cage, six-point harness and the Recaro driver's race.
To achieve a weight of 2,910 pounds, the GT4 Clubsport uses a composite aluminum frame. Natural fiber composite materials help to give even more weight. The back wing, as well as the doors, are made of a natural fiber blend obtained from agricultural products, including flax fibers and hemp fibers. Porsche claims similar carbon fiber benefits in terms of weight and rigidity.
Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport is currently available for ordering. We do not expect Porsche to make many of them, as it only delivers more than 420 copies of the previous GT4 Clubsport.
