If you did something boring and normal like sleeping last night, you probably missed the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max pre-orders started at 3:00 Eastern Time last night. The new iPhones will be in stores for a week, which means we have officially entered a dangerous dusk zone where a handful of misinformed (or desperate) people will buy an iPhone X for an eye water, either out of ignorance or need. Do not be one of them.
Apple has done something unusual this year and completely kills iPhone X for 2017 in favor of new and shinier models. Normally, when a new flagship comes out, Apple only reduces the previous year's model, and it will be the "cheap" iPhone option. This year is not going to happen because, in addition to iPhone XS, Apple also launched iPhone XR, a $ 749 iPhone for people who do not care about things like OLED vs. LCD.
But iPhone XR is not on sale until October, and iPhone XS is not in stores until 21
A $ 100 discount on a phone that, until last week, Apple's best iPhone was not sounding good. But unless you absolutely have to go out of a store right now, today, with the very best iPhone you can get your hands on, there's not a single valid reason to buy iPhone X right now.
The reason is not very easy: iPhone XR, which will be out in a month, is significantly cheaper and better than iPhone X. Certainly, it has an LCD display instead of theoretically better OLED, but Apple's LCD- Monitors have always been amazing and nothing is changing. The iPhone XR has the same Face ID sensor as iPhone X, same form factor, same waterproof and wireless charging, and it actually has a much better processor.
In fact, there are two things that the iPhone X has that iPhone XR does not do: 3D Touch, and a dual-camera setup on the back. If you are the kind of pereson who really cares about having 3D Touch on the phone, I will go out on a limb and suggest that you are also the kind of person who can wait an extra week to get an iPhone XS almost same price as an iPhone X. The two-camera setup will be missed on iPhone XR, but the only camera that Apple has put on iPhone XR is better in itself than the camera on iPhone X, and the iPhone XR can also do portrait mode images , which was the reason to buy an iPhone X in the first place.
So if you can find and iPhone X for $ 500 this week, be sure, go for it. It is still an excellent phone and it will not be much worse than the iPhone XS or XR in any noticeable way. But if you can wait a week or a month, you can either have a much better phone at the same price, or a slightly better phone for significantly less money. There is a hell of a no-brainer.
