Grinding Gear Games hosted a new livestream on Thursday focusing on The path of exile 2. The studio also announced the new Ultimatum extension for The path of exile, set for launch on April 16.
Grinding Gear Games organized the live stream into several parts, starting with a new one Exile Path 2 trailer and an expanded gameplay section before jumping into the Ultimatum. The studio then hosted a question and answer session with ZiggyD – a popular The path of exile YouTuber.
Exile Path 2 was first announced at ExileCon in 201
The trailer shows several new game clips and locations from the new Vastiri desert location – the second major location in Exile Path 2, after Island of Ogham, first unveiled at ExileCon 2019. After the trailer, Wilson talks about a game showcase for Exile Path 2, sat completely in the new place.
The showcase showed several varied areas in the Vastiri desert region, as well as the massive new caravan that herds players between different areas of your choice. But the star in the showcase are two of the new weapon types for Exile Path 2: spear and crossbow.
Both types of weapons have inherent skills, specific to that type of weapon. For example, the spear shown in the showcase gave players a Whirling Slash ability, which conjured up a storm near the player. Leaving the storm causes it to explode in an area – it is made easier by another of the spear’s inherent abilities: its liberating ability, which causes the player to fly backwards and throw knives at enemies. The crossbows are just as unique, with the ability to switch to different elemental or armor-piercing bolts, depending on the combat requirements. Wilson told the press that the studio is unsure which – if any – older weapon types will see similar actual skills.
The studio also showed off new mini-bosses – a greater focus in Exile Path 2 – and the game’s improved animations. Enemy packs also have more unique AI in the sequel, with monster groups patrolling certain areas as soldiers.
One of the more interesting aspects of Exile Path 2 is that it does not replace the original promotion. Both the original campaign and the sequel campaign will continue in the same game client, with players able to take their old characters and accounts – complete with all microtransactions – through the new story or the old one. For that purpose both The path of exile and Exile Path 2 will converge to a split playoff after the promotion. And it’s there The path of exile: Ultimatum comes in.
After Exile Path 2 gameplay showcase, Wilson switched to Ultimatum, a new expansion and League (The path of exilehis word for seasons) comes next week. Wilson also said that all recent and future leagues are built with Exile Path 2 in mind.
Ultimatum offers players what is really one Do you want to be a millionaire? –style gameshow, but with a little more death and blood. Players will face Trialmaster – a messenger of chaos – who will commission players to review trial versions.
Trials will show players a reward and ask them to choose a difficulty change. If they succeed in the trial, their reward is to take. However, Trialmaster will also offer a new, potentially even better loot if the players decide to continue. The second trial period will be even more difficult than the first, as will the third, fourth and so on, if the players decide to push it.
Players can walk away with their rewards between these levels, but if they die at any time, they lose everything. Players will be able to trigger these events with objects found in the world, and even sacrifice objects to request even more powerful drops from an upcoming trial period. Trials can also give players unique rewards with interesting effects.
Ultimatum Trials also works in multiplayer, which is a nice touch. Players can run trials together, and one can drop out with the rewards while the other pushes the luck. Players even vote on which difficulty modifier they prefer, while the game rolls the dice in case of a tiebreaker.
Ultimatum also comes with the usual quality of life improvements and additions to the game. For this league, Grinding Gear Games focused on prey drops, changing around different things that can and can not fall from enemies. Final Act Bosses are now also more lucrative for spreading how players spend their time cultivating things. Some items that were league-specific – which means that the players had to make a certain content to get the chance to them – are now also displayed in the general item pool.
Finally, Ultimatum adds some new skills to defeat enemies. For a complete overview of the new skills and the comprehensive list of reward changes, check out the full livestream.
Wilson and his team did not offer a release window for Exile Path 2, even though we know it will not be out by the end of 2021. The path of exile: Ultimatum launches April 16.
