"Drivers and pedestrians are used to interacting in certain ways, removing a driver from any vehicle can lead to insecurity and error communication," said the patent. And the document shows some ways the described system could be used to communicate with people around an autonomous vehicle. One picture shows a car showing the intended passenger's name as it approaches them while another portrays a self-propelled car telling a pedestrian that it is safe to go in front of the car. The patent also contains pictures showing a self-propelled car, so another vehicle knows that it provides and informs a cyclist that it is safe to pass.
