Outriders are only a week old, and players in a particular class find themselves fringed by someone in the playoffs.
When you finish the Outriders’ campaign, the Expeditions part of People Can Fly’s looter shooter presents itself. This is the playoffs of Outriders – what makes people play for several months in a row. The video below explains how expeditions work.
There are 15 unique missions here, each of which has an exclusive exchange. Layered at the top is the Challenge Tier system, which affects the difficulty of the enemies you encounter and the level of exchange.
In addition, the faster you complete an expedition, the greater the chance you have of grabbing high-quality items (for example, the chance of a legendary fall increases). This means that expeditions are mainly speed races with injuries. So to run around and do as much damage as possible as quickly as possible is the name of the game. Devastator is struggling here. And that’s why some people kick Devastators out of the partnership when they find themselves matched with one.
Devastator is apparently the Outriders tank, although it can be specified to do damage. The problem is that the destroyer’s damage production cannot compete with the other classes (Technomancer, Pyromancer and Trickster). And the way expeditions work makes the damage effect the most important measure of success.
I have seen examples of the Devastator network complaining about being kicked out of the endgame collaboration – and their resulting battle to grow for better equipment. I’m a Devastator principal myself, and the class is definitely struggling on the injury front. But no one knew how the playoff “meta” would play when one chose a lead role just a week ago. And now, just seven days later, the Devastators are having a hard time.
Oh man I love playing devastator from r / outriders
Me as solo as Devastator from r / outriders
The situation has sparked an interesting debate about the rights and flaws of starting players out of collaborative activities. Should those who simply want the best chance of getting the best deal be blamed for not wanting to play with the Devastators, given the clear injury difference? Or should they play with the Devastators if the Outriders’ matchmaking pushes them together, knowing that the race could be adversely affected?
It seems early to talk about changes in the Outriders balance given many technical problems the game faces – and continues to face. But I imagine that the developers at People Can Fly will keep an eye on how Expeditions plays out.
