(Pocket-lint) – OnePlus added Nord CE 5G to its cheaper Nord range of smartphones, joining OnePlus Nord, OnePlus Nord N10 and OnePlus Nord N100.
Just below the OnePlus Nord in terms of specifications, instead of replacing it, here’s how the OnePlus Nord CE 5G compares to the Nord to help you figure out what’s right for you.
- North: 158.3 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm, 184 g
- Nord CE 5G: 159.2 x 73.5 x 7.9 mm, 170 g
OnePlus North and North CE 5G look close at first glance, especially from behind. Both have a pill-shaped camera body on the back at the top left, and both have a flat screen.
Dive a little deeper, however, there are some notable differences between the two models. The original Nord has a plastic frame, but has a glass behind. It also has a notification slider like other OnePlus devices, although it does not have a headphone jack.
The OnePlus Nord CE 5G, meanwhile, has a plastic frame as well as a plastic at the rear, and although it offers a headphone jack, it misses the notification slider.
In terms of physical size and weight, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is slimmer and lighter than the Nord, but fractionally taller and wider. Both come in three color choices with Nord available in Blue Marble, Gray Oynx and Gray Ash, while Nord CE 5G comes in Blue Void, Charcoal Ink and Silver Ray. No one has an official IP rating.
- North: 6.44 inches, 2400 x 1
- Nord CE 5G: 6.43-inch, 2400 x 1080 (410ppi), 90Hz
OnePlus North and North CE 5G have very similar specifications when it comes to their screens. Nord has a 6.44-inch screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, and offers a pixel density of 408ppi.
The OnePlus Nord CE 5G, meanwhile, has a 6.43-inch screen, also with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels that sets its pixel density at a slightly higher 410ppi due to the 0.1-inch reduction in size. This difference is not something you will notice.
Both devices have a 90Hz refresh rate, both have an AMOLED display and both have a 20: 9 aspect ratio. They also both have a P3 color spectrum.
Hardware and specifications
- North: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, 8 / 12GB RAM, 128 / 256GB storage, 4115mAh
- Nord CE 5G: Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G, 6/8/12 GB RAM, 128/256 GB storage, 4500 mAh
OnePlus Nord runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G platform, supported by either 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. However, it is not available in the US, with the Nord N10 model placed there instead.
It’s a 4115mAh battery under the hood, and it supports 30T Warp Charge fast charging, but it’s no wireless charging.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G 5G platform, supported by 6 GB, 8 GB or 12 GB or RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. You are looking at a very similar load here, with Nord CE 5G taking a small dip in processing power, but this is probably not something you will notice in daily use.
Nord CE 5G has a larger battery capacity than Nord at 4500mAh, and it supports 30T Plus Warp Charge fast charging, but again there is no wireless charging.
- North: Quad rear (48MP head + 8MP ultra wide + 5MP depth + 2MP macro), dual front (32MP head + 8MP ultra wide)
- North CE 5G: Triple rear (64MP main + 8MP ultra wide + 2MP mono), single front (16MP)
OnePlus Nord has a square camera on the back which consists of a 48 megapixel main camera with 0.8 µm pixels and af / 1.6 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle lens with f / 2.25 aperture, a 5 megapixel deep lens with aperture f / 2.4 and a macro lens of 2 megapixels with aperture f / 2.4.
It is a dual front camera with a 32-megapixel main camera that offers off / 2.45 aperture, and an 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera with f / 2.45 aperture.
OnePlus Nord CE, meanwhile, has a triple rear camera with a 64-megapixel main camera with 0.7 µm pixels and off / 1.79 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens with f / 2.25 aperture and a 2-megapixel monoline lens with f / 2.4 aperture.
The front camera is a single lens with a 16 megapixel sensor, and has an aperture of f / 2.45.
When it comes to video capabilities, both North and North CE 5G supports 4K video recording at 30 frames per second and 1080p video at 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second. They also both support super slow motion video, but Nord CE 5G offers 1080p at 120 fps and 720 at 240 fps, while Nord has 1080p at 240 fps.
Nord CE 5G’s front camera is also only capable of 1080p video, while Nord offers 4K video from the front camera.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G and Nord offer similar designs, but Nord CE 5G has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a plastic body, while Nord has a warning slider and a glass at the back. Nord CE is also slimmer and lighter.
Both have very similar screens, and both offer similar hardware loads, although Nord has a more powerful processor on board and an extra camera front and rear, while Nord CE 5G has greater battery capacity.
Overall, the two handsets are mostly level, and both tip the weight in their own areas. Nord CE 5G is fractionally cheaper than Nord, but there is not much in it, so the decision will probably come down to which features you are more bothered with.
