When Apple announced iPhone XS and iPhone XR last month, it began selling a variety of cases for XS, including its regular Apple-branded silicone and leather cases. But it did not seem to talk about any official accessories for the iPhone XR.
It turns out – it did. At the bottom of some press releases in some countries, like Canada, the original iPhone XR press release mentions that Apple will release a clear case for iPhone XR. This line is only present on some countries' Apple Newsroom portals. It does not appear on the U.S. site, and therefore it has gone the most unnoticed until now. A tip star has given a picture of what Apple's very first clear case looks like …
Apple started making things with iPhone 4, the infamous bumper Apple made up give away for free after Antennagate.
It introduced full leather cases with iPhone 5s. For iPhone 5c, Apple had the notorious Holey rubber victims, which showed the color of the unapologetically plastic iPhone 5c it protected with a polar crotch grid with circular sections. Apple offered standard silicone and leather cases for iPhone 6 and later.
This gives us the full circle to iPhone XR, which goes up for pre-order in a week's time and launches October 26th. The iPhone XR comes in six colors: black, white, red, yellow, blue and coral.
A regular leather or silicone case will simply hide the colorful glass finishes completely. Instead of trying something extravagant like the iPhone 5c case design, Apple keeps it simple and launches its first fully clear plastic bag. This is a marketing image of how it looks, per source:
It's not just winning any design innovation prices – it's a fairly common matter that lets the color of your phone shine through from all sides. In the same way as leather or silicone case, the Apple iPhone XR case has an open bottom. This means that there is nothing wrong with the bottom edge of the screen when you do all the different swipe moves to navigate the phone. Everything else is very run by the mill.
Speck is already selling its iPhone XR case, and it's Spigen ($ 14). There is not much to distinguish between Speck and the official Apple case, but the Apple case has the above open bundle design and is not emblazoned with some third party logos.
Apple press release says that the iPhone XR case will sell for $ 55 CAD, or about $ 40 in the United States. We have asked Apple why this case is not mentioned in the iPhone XR US press release, and will update if we hear back. Nor is it known whether there are other Apple-designed iPhone XR cases in the off, perhaps a folio case for XR.
