Nintendo has shared a new volume in its Metroid Dread Report series. This largely explains many of the characteristics of the Metroid series for uninitiated players, but it also sheds some light on the new Power Suit that Samus has in the upcoming Switch game.
According to the post, the sleek new suit that Samus uses in Metroid Dread is actually the organic suit from Metroid Fusion that “gradually returns to its original shape.” As the development team explains:
“In Metroid Dread, it seems that the Samus suit has changed quite a bit from her previous quest. This is the result of the organic suit from Metroid Fusion – which was greatly transformed after the attack from X parasitic life form and the injection of Metroid vaccine – gradually back to its original mechanical Power Suit form. “
Samus received the Organic Fusion Suit at the beginning of Metroid Fusion, after being infected and almost killed by the X parasites. X can inhabit and mimic other life forms, making them one of the most dangerous threats in the galaxy. As you learn in Fusion, the titular Metroids were actually created to replace X, but the extinction of the Metroids in the hands of Samus during Metroid II (and its 3DS remake 2017, Metroid: Samus Returns) led to X’s resurgence. Samus apparently destroys all the X parasites at the end of Fusion, but she receives a transmission that some may still exist on the planet ZDR, and sets the stage for Metroid Dread.
Beyond that, the new post also gives us a closer look at the Metroid Dread map screen. This is much more detailed than previous games in the series, and shows the actual terrain in each room. It also allows you to place up to six markers to mark points of interest. You can look at some screenshots of the map screen below.
Metroid Dread launches for Nintendo Switch on October 8. The game will be released in standard and collector’s editions, where the latter contains a steel box game, art book and collectible art card. You can learn more in our pre-order guide for Metroid.
