March 27, 2011, Nintendo released the 3DS, the handheld successor to the uber-successful Nintendo DS. Since then, it has sold out 70 million units all over the world and had released a number of great games for it over the last decade.
I was lucky enough to capture a 3DS around the time it was launched. While console shortages were somewhat back in 2011, there was nothing like today. Here’s what I mean: My dad and I drove up to a store, maybe Walmart, on a whim, about a week after the 3DS came out. We did not check online or call ahead. And when we got there, we found four or five 3DS consoles behind plexiglass and sat waiting to be bought. Can you imagine this Today? I do not see myself to go into a store a week or even a month after a major console release and just find some in 2021.
When I got the 3Ds, I played a lot Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D because I’m a big idiot and I love Resident Evil game. I was excited too to play Revelations. The second memory I have of the 3DS at launch was playing with AR cards and games. Not for more than a few days, but they were fun and a nice thing to show people.
3DS is the last Nintendo console I bought at launch. (Although if Switch 4k does not become too expensive, I can buy a Nintendo console on day one again. We’ll see..) While it is far from my favorite console, I still fondly remember my time with it. I even liked the 3D features. I left the slider on because it looked cool.
What memories do you have of the Nintendo 3DS? And who else out there played it Revelations demo i the Mercs 3D way more than once?
