The big closed beta for Amazon’s MMO New World started just yesterday, and things initially seemed to go more smoothly than I had expected. I started watching a few people play, which I had hoped for. Ed seems to have enjoyed it so far according to previews of his new world. Since yesterday, however, it has become a bit too hot to handle for some people who use RTX 3090 graphics cards. Players on several different forums report overheating that has led to GPU errors. Amazon is aware of the problem and has started with some tips to help players avoid overheating.
Over on New World subreddit, EVGA forums and New Worlds forum gamers are reporting problems with GPU overheating. In particular, many players using EVGA̵
“EVGA 3090 FTW3 – went fine for about 30 minutes> black screen play continues> fans shot up to 100% right after black screen> hard reset and now no video,” explains one player.
“Yup, FTW3 Ultra. High pop, screens off, 100% fan spin – restarted, red light on power outlets, done,” describes another.
“Started up the game for the first time, I was on the brightness calibration screen, and by clicking Restore Defaults, all my fans sent overdrive and exploded to Mars. The screen went black and the video output would not come back. I reset hard and the GPU does not turn on on longer, except for the red light from death. Same card! EVGA 3090 FTW3, “from another 3090 user.
Although it seems to be less prone to device errors so far, there are gamers with other vendors and models who also report high temperatures on the GPUs.
New World’s developers are now aware of the problem, and have given some preliminary, albeit somewhat sparse, advice on keeping GPU usage down:
- Disable the overrides in the driver settings,
- Be sure to press “APPLY”
- Restart the game client.
You can also cover the FPS. This will help prevent problems with GPU usage.
Go to Settings> Visuals> Max fps> Set this to 60, this will help reduce usage again.
In addition, check the NVIDIA control panel under Manage 3D Settings> Application Settings> Select New World, and check that the maximum frame rate either shows’ Use Global Settings (Off) or just Off.
Until there is a final explanation and a clearer solution, it seems best for all 3090 cardholders out there to play it safe and not sail to the New World yet. For those who have different GPUs, it is probably also a decent idea to make sure to limit the frame rate.
