The more lifelike computer figures become, the sharper the resemblance.
Epic’s upcoming Unreal Engine enables game developers to create and customize real human character models using software called MetaHuman Creator – which lets developers fine-tune facial features, skin tone and build from preset body types, clothing, hair and even teeth.
Some may think the MetaHuman Creator preview is scary, but still the eerie valley of equality of real people is worth riding.
New Unreal Engine lets you create lifelike digital people
The sneak peek video from Unreal is not unlike any other game called “Sims 4”
You can lift or drop the eyebrows and change the jaw shape and the height of the ear. Makeup is there for a reason, and even eyelash length can change. The program also includes a slider to manipulate the size and depth of facial wrinkles.
While many of these features are also available on “Sims 4”, Unreal Engine breaks with its doppelganger by enabling cloud-based storage – which means you can build realistic virtual people directly in your browser, without the need for independent software (like a game board) or a top-level computer processor).
Unreal Motor’s new character design pushes into the eerie valley
When you’re done, you can export your creation and download it directly to the Unreal Engine desktop app – and see it seem self-confident. This is because the lifelike creations are ready to animate and work with filming in movies, games and a handful of other visual media.
And you do not have to be a game developer to understand how much time this can save.
This new technology is so good at mimicking human facial movements that it almost slides into the eerie valley – a perceptual phenomenon where humanoid robots or computer-generated faces seem so almost identical to the real thing you feel deeply disturbed by the experience.
The coming decades may change the nature of face-based identification
If this sounds like your ideal night in, Unreal Engine has created two fully prepared character samples ready for future MetaHuman Creator users. The fully loaded program is still under development, but will be released later this year.
New advances in AI and deep learning technology are to blame for this new realistic face modeling software, but AI also leads to better animation of movement throughout the body – so subtle that the character’s lips can speak a sentence as convincingly as a real-life human.
Compared to a recent breakthrough in graphics – which allows developers to build CGI skin (and pores) – you will not be mistaken when you think that deep fakes in the coming decade may change the character to face-based identification for holder.
