Just a few days into February, we already see this month’s second major iPhone 13 leak. We’ve already heard that some huge new storage options are on the way, and now a brand new leak could explain why – the camera on this thing can be incredible.
A new report suggests that the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 13 may have a much larger aperture than the iPhone 12. While the latter has an f / 2.4 lens, the new model will push it to f / 1.8 (smaller number means of course corresponds to a larger aperture – check out our photography guide if you need a refresher).
According to the report of well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (as discovered by MacRumors), the Chinese lens supplier Sunny Optical is about to send the hugely improved lens to the iPhone 13 in the “second half of 2021”.
While the iPhone 12 already offers brilliant photography in low light thanks to night mode, software solutions will never be a battle for raw hardware – and a better aperture will mean even better photography at night, as more light can pass through the lens.
Kuo also says that the iPhone 13 Pro will have a slightly improved telephoto lens. While the 12 Pro Max has a 2.5x optical zoom, the Pro is limited to 2x. This year, the smaller Pro model will have the same 2.5x zoom as the Max. It’s a small upgrade, but the 12 Pro Max incredible telephoto lens is what put it at the top of our best camera phone list, and we’ll be happy to see it hit more portable models.
Shooting in low light is an area where smartphones have been behind traditional cameras, but for some users the gap is absolutely closing. Improved aperture can only be a good thing for photographers on the go, and it will be interesting to see how much better the iPhone 13 performs as its predecessor. Still, a world where a smartphone is the only camera photographers need is probably far away – we do not think any of our best cameras should be worried yet.
As with all leaks, time will tell how accurate the latter turns out to be, but it’s more exciting to add to the ever-growing pile of iPhone 13 rumors. From remarkable battery life to brand new screen technology, Apple’s next smartphone sounds more impressive by the day – here’s everything we know about the iPhone 13 so far.
Of course, the dust has barely settled on the iPhone 12, which not only has incredible camera technology, but has the added benefit of existing right now. Take a look at today’s best deals below, and don’t forget to stop by our most important Apple deals page to get the best deals in one place.
