If you own a pair of AirPods Pro earbuds or the new AirPods Max headphones, you may be queuing up for a Netflix audio upgrade in the near future – the streaming service is rumored to be working on spatial audio support for Apple devices.
The report comes from iPhoneSoft, quotes an anonymous Netflix developer, and says that the feature has been under testing since December. A launch over the next few months hits, with a small selection of titles set to support spatial sound to begin with.
For the uninitiated, spatial sound essentially creates a more immersive surround sound experience. Surround audio signals that are usually sent to multiple speakers ̵
The acoustic trick gives the impression that some sounds are coming from different directions, even if you only have two speakers on each side of your head. You need AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, plus an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or later, to enjoy it.
Sounds good to us
While the upcoming spatial audio support has only been reported by one source so far – so don’t treat it as a given yet – it makes sense for Netflix to support the format. Netflix already offers several surround sound standards with the content, so it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to add another.
In addition, spatial sound is already supported by services such as Disney Plus, HBO Max and (of course) Apple TV Plus. Netflix will not be left behind in terms of the features it offers subscribers, whether it is spatial audio or something else.
Based on the feedback we’ve heard since spatial sound first appeared on the AirPods Pro back in September, the end result is actually quite impressive – it’s, as advertised, almost like having a full surround sound setup in two earbuds.
Neither Netflix nor Apple has given any official comment on whether the upgrade will come soon, but we will keep you updated as soon as we know. In the meantime, you can check out the best movies on Netflix while you wait.
