Oh, and competing with Tesla Model Y and Wall Street darling Elon Musk.
The all-electric Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition “targets” 0-60 km / h in 3.5 seconds, the company announced on Tuesday. The figure is “calculated via peak performance of the electric motor (s) at maximum battery power,” said the automaker.
It is unusual for a car manufacturer to market performance figures based on simulations.
The Mach-E GT Performance Edition will generate 480 horsepower and 634 pounds of torque. Ford says it is also aiming for an estimate of 235 miles.
“We have already pushed the envelope by making an electric vehicle with the pony brand, so it is only natural that we push it further,” said Darren Palmer, Ford’s global director of battery electric cars, in a press release. “The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition not only gives you the extra performance you expect from the GT name, but highlights the excitement of the response to an all-electric drive.”

Is the speed really necessary? Yes. Yes, it is.
“Elon Musk has made almost a game and certainly a reputation for his cars’ excellent performance, among other things. Mach-E is of course a direct competitor to the Model Y. If Ford is to compete, they must have range, style, advanced technology and acceleration figures to stand up to what Elon is showing, “said Karl Brauer, chief analyst at iSeeCars.com, a car entry and data site.
“It’s a joke that says horsepower is what you read about, and torque is what you feel,” Brauer said. “When you feel the neck muscles stretch to keep your head level and not pull back, you are fighting torque – not horsepower.”
An electric motor has an advantage over the internal combustion engine because it can reach maximum torque immediately instead of a gradual crescendo.
In the fast-growing electric vehicle area (EV), Tesla continues to dominate. The California-based anti-union automaker has set a bar among consumers for vision and excellence. No matter which company tries to compete with Tesla, no one has a cachet that the billionaire from South Africa has established.
“The questions are, ‘Will Mach-E finally break the not-so-glorious tradition of not having a successful, non-Tesla EV?’ It has the best shot of any EV yet, “said Brauer. “The reasons are basically because it offers almost exactly the same package as a Model Y – space, style, size, range and now performance. The Mach-E GT performs very well on a technical level.”
Ford wants to sustain consumers, especially in California, who want to buy from a company that supports strict air quality standards and employs the most hourly workers in the US automotive industry after 117 years.
“The Mustang is one of the most famous type plates in car history,” said Brauer. “Ford has checked all the boxes that need to be checked, and a couple of other boxes that no other electric vehicle offers.”
