Minecraft 1.18 looks like it will generate incredible caves

Mojang may have snapped off the caves and cliffs from the first half of the Caves & Cliffs update to Minecraft, but it looks like the second half will be worth the wait. Mojang released an experimental snapshot for 1.18 yesterday, and people have started to find some completely wild worlds created by the new terrain generation. If you have not had time to take a trip for yourself, there are quite a few screenshots and videos of some things that have been discovered so far.

7;t worry. I did not immediately find myself in some floating island zero world. It is still definitely Minecraft, albeit with mountain-ier-mountains and cave-former caves.

Some other people have taken the time to look for and share their seeds for nice 1.18 finds though. Here is a specific world, shared on Reddit, which really shows off part of the wild cave generation on several levels that takes place in 1.18. You can see a transparent video by the poster there in the link with the lighting that is turned up to better see all the blocks. At the top is my vision. I had to increase the thread spacing to 24 pieces to catch the back of the cave from the surface. Here’s a little more of it, with some lush caves and lots of waterfalls:

Remember, of course, that this version of 1.18 is far from final. In his announcement post from yesterday, Mojang warned that this snapshot may still be quite different from the full release of 1.18. “Some features can be changed or removed significantly if needed to improve performance,” they say.

Here is Mojang’s list of terrain changes in this experimental snapshot:

  • New world height and depth
  • New mountain biomes (high peaks, snow-capped peaks, groves, meadows and snow-covered slopes)
  • New cave generation (cheese, spaghetti and noodle caves)
  • Local water levels and lava levels in the subsoil
  • New cave biomes naturally generate underground and inside mountains (lush caves, stalactite caves)
  • Natural variation in terrain shape and height, independent of biomes. For example, forests and deserts can be formed on a hill without the need for a special biome just for that.
  • New ore distribution
  • Large ore veins
  • Integrated mountains, caves and cave entrances
  • Monsters will only spawn in complete darkness

There is obviously a lot going on here. New mountain biomes are relatively self-explanatory, as are the local water and low levels that Mojang has shown us before. What is the difference between a spaghetti cave and a noodle cave though? I do not know yet, but am eager to find out.

It is, of course, all the most photogenic. Given the experimental nature, you will have to walk over somewhat more silly new terrain if you choose to try the snapshot yourself. Directions for how to do this are also in Mojang’s announcement.

As for the final version, Mojang says that traditional snapshots for 1.18 are likely to begin around September, with the final release still expected near the end of this year. I have always enjoyed Minecraft’s villages and the interesting ways they sometimes generate. So before I go, here’s one I found while flying around earlier. It is a desert village that seems to have taken a beach holiday.

I mean, the sand itself is not out of place, I guess.
