Microsoft will add text predictions to Word next month

Predicting text can make writing much faster.

Microsoft plans to roll out text prediction support for Word in March, according to the Microsoft 365 roadmap. Word text predictions, previously discovered by tech news site Neowin, will work in the same way as Smart compose in Google Docs. Text prediction uses machine learning to predict the word or phrase the author needs to write next for faster text composition.

When text predictions are turned on in Microsoft, suggestions appear in gray. To accept, press the Tab key or reject it by pressing Esc. Text predictions can also be turned off completely.

Microsoft has not yet announced whether they plan to let the text prediction indicate gender – such as “him” and “her”. The company had no comments yet. Google Smart Compose called for comparison in 2018 not to suggest gender-based pronouns to avoid potential bias.
