A little known company has turned Samsung into battle with the introduction of the world's first smartphone with a folding display.
The product is called FlexPai and comes from Royole Corporation, which unveiled the handset on Wednesday in Beijing. It is built with a flexible display that can fold the device like a wallet.
Royole calls FlexPai to a phone, but the device is also a tablet. Developed, the product has a 7.8-inch screen with a 920-in-1,440 resolution. It's also a bit hot and weighs at 0.70 pounds (or twice as much as an iPhone X.)
The vendor claims that the Android-based device can bend over 200,000 times. When folding it, you get a phone with front and rear screen. However, FlexPai does not fold completely flat so it does not fit well in your pocket.
You can see how all this works in practice in the video below. When folding the phone, the device can adjust the display even though the transitions are not completely smooth.
The pioneering screen on FlexPai will surely put it from other devices on the market. But the product is not cheap; The base model starts at $ 1,291. Completely upgraded, it goes for $ 1,864.
Samsung plans to uncover its own folding smartphone as soon as next week at the company's developer conference in San Francisco. The product will allegedly also have a large screen that can be folded in the same way as FlexPai.
Although Royole is not a well-known brand in the technology industry, the company has been working with flexible screen technology for the past five years. The company itself actually has headquarters in Fremont, California, but most of its employees are based in China, where it has a factory in Shenzhen.
Royole told PCMag that it plans to sell the folding phone in the United States, but it has not exactly the exact date. In China, it will start selling the product by the end of December.
FlexPai is built with a named Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Series chip that has been clocked to 2.8GHz. The base model comes with 6GB of RAM, 128GB, and a microSD card slot for more memory. It has two cameras, one of 20 megapixels, the other at 16MP. You can find full specifications here.
Royole is also a provider of flexible monitors so it can burn more collapsible phone designs through other suppliers in China. Royole says that the Shenzhen factory can build 50 million flexible display units per year.
