Leaked an NFL free agent deal during an online ‘Call of Duty’ game?

NFL news can really get anywhere. Even from an online video game between complete strangers.

In what must be one of the most random potential news leaks in recent memory, Reddit user ProbationOfficer2035 posted a blind nugget on Saturday to Reddit’s NFL thread about what he or she thought was a trade. It was not so much that the user had received some information about something at work – it was how he or she got nugget.

In this case? In a bit of a wild improbability, it came from an open microphone during an online “Call of Duty” game called “Warzone”, which has an option to randomly turn on strangers and play virtually together. The Reddit user here (who is a self-proclaimed Green Bay Packers fan) happened to be merged with the significant other of Chicago Bears offensive lineman Rashaad Coward. And well, if you̵

7;ve ever played “Call of Duty” online, you often get random teammates whose open microphone can pick up almost everything is said inside his room. Including the conversations of people who do not even play the game.

Then, at noon Monday, NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport reported that the Steelers are expected to sign Coward:

On Saturday night, Coward even tweeted this:

On Sunday, one of Coward’s agents, Brian Adkins, tweeted a follow-up to Coward’s wife (who is an avid player with her own Twitch channel) who appears to confirm that something actually happened in a random “Call of Duty” game. :

Coward was a restricted free agent who was not offered an offer from the Bears. And now it looks like he’s going to sign with the Steelers. At least one thing is for sure: the ears of the NFL’s reputation factory are everywhere, including on the other side of the gaming microphone.
