What do I lose with iPhone XR?

With a $ 250 lower price point, the iPhone XR does not have all the bells and wings for iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max. Apple had to do some trade-offs to get the price down, but not as many as one could expect.

We have explained the differences between iPhone XR and iPhone XS in more detail below, but from a bird's eye view, expect some compromises related to the screen, cameras and overall design. Apple has also replaced 3D Touch on iPhone XR with a new haptic feedback solution called Haptic Touch.

iPhone XS vs iPhone XR: Feature Comparison

Displays

Like the previous generation of iPhone X, the iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch screen while the iPhone XS Max has a larger 6.5-inch display. The IPhone XR switches between these sizes, with a 6.1 inch screen.

While the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have OLED monitors, the iPhone XR uses an LCD as a cost-saving measure. Due to the limitations of LCD technology, the iPhone XR screen is not completely edge-to-edge, with marginally thicker fittings than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

The iPhone XR screen has a resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels, or 326 pixels per inch, slightly lower than 2436 × 1125 pixels resolution on the iPhone XS screen, good for 458 pixels per inch.

Apple has used LCD monitors since its original iPhone, and the displays are usually among the best in the industry, so despite the fact that they are not OLED, the iPhone XR should still provide a quality viewing experience.

On a display-related note, Apple has replaced 3D Touch on iPhone XR with a new haptic feedback solution called Haptic Touch.

Design

Beyond the viewing differences, the overall design of the iPhone XR is a bit different from the iPhone XS. For example, the iPhone XR has an aluminum frame along the edges, instead of stainless steel.

The back of the iPhone XR is still made of glass to support Qi-based wireless charging. On that note, Apple says that the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have "enhanced" wireless charging, so it's possible that the models will have increased output, with fast charging on iPhone XR remaining up to 7.5W.

iPhone XR is marginally thicker than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max of 8.3mm versus 7.7mm for the last two models.

In addition to the slightly thicker display frames, the rear camera with an objective and more colors, this is more or less an iPhone XS-esque device, with a Face ID sensor notch and an almost edge-to-edge view. There are also the usual lightning switches, loudspeakers, volume switches and so on.

Battery Life

Apple says iPhone XS lasts up to 30 minutes longer than iPhone X, while iPhone XR lasts up to 1.5 hours longer than iPhone 8 Plus. These statistics are hard to compare, so here's the breakdown:

Even though it's cheaper, iPhone XR actually achieves between two and five hours longer battery life per charge cycle, depending on the task, compared to the iPhone XS. In fact, the iPhone XR has a little longer battery life than even the iPhone XS Max, which gets two smaller hours of network usage.

This is probably because iPhone XR's so-called Liquid Retina display is less power hungry than OLED displays, and due to more physical space for a larger lithium-ion battery inside the iPhone XR.

Cameras

All three new iPhones have a 12 megapixel rear-facing wide-angle lens, but XS and XS Max have two cameras with an extra 12 megapixel telephoto lens while XR has the single lens.

This means that the iPhone XR lacks 2x optical zoom, which is the ability to zoom in on a subject up to 2x without any blurriness. Digital zoom, which gives blur, is limited to 5x, to 10x on XS and XS Max.

Even though the camera has a lens battery, the iPhone XR has advanced technologies that enable depth control portrait mode, which automatically adjusts the depth of field or bokeh effect in the background of the pictures. The iPhone XR also has Smart HDR, which gives more highlight and shadow detail to images.

All three new iPhones have a 7 megapixel front-end TrueDepth camera, but the iPhone XR is limited to three effects on Portrait Lighting: Natural, Studio, and Contour. The iPhone XS and XS Max models also feature scene and scene mono effects.

Storage

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are available in 64GB, 256GB and brand new 512GB storage configurations. iPhone XR comes with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB, so if you're looking for the new 512GB option, you'll have to pay for an XS or XS Max.

Colors

iPhone XS and iPhone XS are available in Silver, Space Gray and Gold finish.

iPhone XR is available in a wider range of finishes including Blue, White, Black, Yellow, Coral and (PRODUCT) RED.

Prising

As mentioned above, iPhone XR starts at $ 749 in the United States, representing $ 250 savings over iPhone XS, priced at $ 999. It is also $ 350 cheaper than iPhone XS Max, the price from $ 1099. As another comparison, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus last year reached $ 599 and $ 699.

Then should I buy an iPhone XS or iPhone XR?

For many people, the iPhone XR is the one that will be. It's iPhone X for people who do not prefer to spend $ 999 or more on a smartphone, but will still have a powerful and capable device with the latest technical specifications.

We recommend iPhone XR to anyone who wants a taste of the iPhone X era: a large, almost edge-to-edge monitor with notch, face ID, glass back, and both wireless and fast charging. You also get deep-mode portrait mode, Smart HDR, and the same performance enhancements on the A12 Bionic chip.

iPhone XR is also a bigger screen than iPhone XS, and longer battery life than both XS and XS Max.

We recommend iPhone XS, and more specifically the iPhone XS Max specifically, for anyone who wants the absolute best iPhone available today: Up to a 6.5-inch OLED screen, up to 512GB of storage, A12 Bionic chip, IP68 -protected water resistance, a stainless steel frame, gigabit class LTE, and so on.

iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR are available for pre-order at Apple.com and through operators as of today.
