iPhone XR shares many features with iPhone XS, including its notched display and Apple A12 Bionic processor. A big difference between the two phones is their rear camera layout, with XS offering two rear cameras and the XR has only a back screen. However, according to a new analysis, it does not mean that the XR camera is bad.
The camera company DxOMark gave the iPhone XR a score of 101 points, making Apple's smartphone the top-ranked single camera device that DxOMark has tested. "It surpasses only Google Pixel 2 for still images, with marginally better noise-versus-texture results, and significantly fewer objects," says the report. "Both devices achieve the same overall score for video." It is worth noting that DxOMark has not yet reviewed Pixel 3 and its only rear camera.
This review of the iPhone XR camera says it provides "excellent" exposure in all lighting conditions, as well as a wide dynamic area and a great auto focus system. DxOMark also says that Apple has improved the flash of XR compared to the iPhone XS Max, which provides better target exposure on the faces and in the middle of the frame in general. The report says that the XR flash is not as good as the Pixel 2's, which gives the best flash performance.
Two areas where the iPhone XR is beaten are zoom and bokeh images. Both are not as good as they are at XS because of XR's lack of a second camera. For example, when it comes to zoom, you are stuck using digital zoom as DxOMark says introduces objects and noise in medium and long areas.
iPhone XR offers some nice features that the iPhone XS does not have, like a colorful back and a lower price tag, but some interested in XR may be worried that Apple made compromises with the camera to reduce the price of the phone. This new report shows that consumers interested in XR do not have to worry about camera performance, but make iPhone XR even more attractive to anyone interested in purchasing one of Apple's new iPhone models.
